Daily Dose of the Dub: Ronning assigned to AHL; Hurricanes to honour Vandervlis, more WHL players on their way back

Ronning among eight Rangers’ cuts

The New York Rangers have cut Vancouver Giants alum Ty Ronning from their training camp roster. A seventh-round pick by the team in 2016, Ronning was always a long shot to make the roster this year. He’ll spend the upcoming season with the Rangers’ AHL affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack. Joining Ronning among the eight cuts is former Everett Silvertips’ and Regina Pats’ winger Dawson Leedahl, who’ll also be in Hartford this season. In 38 games with the Wolf Pack last season, Leedahl potted two goals and six assists.

Silvertips acquire Price from Tigers

The Everett Silvertips have acquired 2001-born forward Jalen Price from the Medicine Hat Tigers in exchange for a fifth-round pick in 2021. Price, originally a third-round pick in the 2016 WHL Draft, registered 18 goals and 23 assists in 44 games with the Campbell River Storm of the VIJHL last season. He also added seven goals and nine assists in 16 playoff games en route to a league championship.

The Silvertips also will be getting Connor Dewar back from the Minnesota Wild. Dewar should be back in time for their three-games in three-nights this weekend.

Riley Sutter should be headed back soon as well. He skated 12:06 of ice time and had one shot and two hits in his Washington Capitals’ 5-2 loss to the Boston Bruins Tuesday night.

Leschyshyn and Chyzowski return from Vegas

-Jake Leschyshyn will be returning to the Regina Pats and Ryan Chyzowski is en route to the Medicine Hat Tigers. Leschyshyn was drafted by the Golden Knights in 2017 and signed on June 1st, 2018.

Chyzowski was a free agent invitee to rookie camp and was extended to main camp.

Warriors reassign Herron and McKenzie

-The Moose Jaw Warriors cut down their roster with the reassignment of 2001-born defenseman Austin Herron and 2002-born forward Austin McKenzie Tuesday.

Herron was a third round pick by the Warriors in the 2016 WHL Bantam draft, while McKenzie was a third round pick in the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft.

Oilers make cuts, assign pair of WHL alumni to AHL

The Oilers have sent 1998-born goalie Stuart Skinner and 1997-born forward Cameron Hebig to their AHL affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors. Both players will be starting their professional careers following exceptional WHL tenures. Skinner, the Oilers’ third-round pick in 2017, gets sent down surprisingly before being able to see any preseason action.

Hurricanes to honour Vandervlis

The Lethbridge Hurricanes will be honouring Ryan Vandervis with special jerseys during pre-game warmup in their season opener this Friday, September 21. Vanderlis, 20, suffered severe burns in a campfire explosion back in June that required stints in the ICU and burn unit, but is expected to make a full recovery.

Winterhawks ink prospect Gervais

The Portland Winterhawks have signed 2001-born forward prospect Kishaun Gervais. The 2016 ninth-round pick spent the 2017-18 season in the SMHL with the Prince Albert Mintos where he accumulated 43 points in 37 games.

The Winterhawks also confirmed with DubNetwork that they had released 1998-born forward Connor Barley and reassigned 2001-born goalie Evan Fradette and 2002-born defenseman Kurtis Smythe.

That leaves their roster at 16 forwards, nine defensemen and two goalies.

Sambrook reassigned

-Brandon has their roster down to 14 forwards, nine defensemen and three goalies. They reassigned Sambrook, a 2000-born defenseman who played 55 games for the Wheat Kings in 2016-17 and 13 games for them in 2017-18.

Heponiemi pots his first SM-liiga goal

Former Swift Current Broncos centre Alek Heponiemi has scored his first professional goal. The Florida Panthers second-rounder ranked third in WHL scoring last year with 118 points in just 57 games.
