CHL to celebrate the history of Memorial Cup 

In normal times, the Kelowna Rockets would have been kicking off the 102nd Memorial Cup on Friday evening with a game against the OHL Champions. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the tournament was canceled for the first time in its illustrious history. However, the CHL won’t let May go by without some Memorial Cup Content. On Friday they are debuting a documentary entitled “Memorial Cup Memories” which will tell some of the best stories in the trophy’s history. The CHL will also be rebroadcasting the last decade of Memorial Cup Finals starting with the 2010 final between the Brandon Wheat Kings and Windsor Spitfires on Monday and concluding with last year’s final between Halifax and Rouyn-Noranda on June 21st.

Rockets release Memorial Cup bid video

The Kelowna Rockets released the video they produced as part of their successful bid for the 2020 Memorial Cup. It features Rockets alumni like Josh Gorges (245 GP, 33 G, 119 A with Kelowna from 2000-2004) Tyler Myers (191 GP, 17 G, 60 A with Kelowna from 2005-2009), Luke Schenn (189 GP, 12 G, 56 A with Kelowna from 2005-2008), Shea Weber (190 GP, 26 G, 65 A with Kelowna from 2001-2005) and Blake Comeau (253 GP, 60 G, 117 A with Kelowna from 2001-2006) among other local celebrities.

Chiefs’ Beckman wins WHL Player of the Year

The Spokane Chiefs have swept this year’s Defenseman and Player of the Year awards with Adam Beckman taking home the latter on Friday. The 19-year old forward led the league in goals (48) and points (107) in 63 games. If the WHL had finished a full season this year, he likely would’ve been the lone 50-goal scorer in the league.

USA Hockey to go ahead with World Junior Summer Showcase

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, USA Hockey is still planning on hosting a World Junior Summer Showcase in late July. However, Mike Morreale of nhl.com reports that Hockey Canada has informed USA Hockey that they will not be attending the showcase this year. Decisions are yet to come from Sweden or Finland who were both expected to attend the showcase as well.

Broncos cancel Summer Youth Hockey Programs

The Swift Current Broncos have canceled this year’s Summer Youth Hockey Programs scheduled from August 17-21 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Gatenby transfers to UBC

Dan Gatenby (120 GP, 1 G, 12 A with the Kelowna Rockets, Kamloops Blazers, and Tri-City Americans from 2015-2018) will be transferring to UBC for the 2020-21 season according to Victor Findlay. Gatenby just finished his rookie season in USports with the now-defunct University of Lethbridge Pronghorns recording a goal and three assists in 19 games.
