Daily Dose of the Dub: Hitmen, Cougars call up prospects; WHLers light the lamp in WJC round robin finales

Hitmen call up goaltending prospect

The Calgary Hitmen recalled ’02 goaltender Ethan Hein from Swift Current of the SMAAAHL. Hein was originally drafted by Swift Current in the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft (3rd round, 57th overall) before being a part of the blockbuster deal that sent Matteo Gennaro and Beck Malenstyn to the Broncos. In 14 midget games, he holds a 2.75 GAA and a .900 SV%.

Prince George brings up defenseman 

The Cougars have added ’01 defenseman Cole Beamin to their roster with ’00 Cole Moberg being injured. Beamin has played in 28 games this season with Nipawin of the SJHL, recording two goals and one assist and 64 penalty minutes. He was originally drafted by Prince George in the second round, 32nd overall in the 2016 WHL Bantam Draft.

Lambos gets into the lineup

After being called up on December 27th, ’03 prospect Carson Lambos was added to the lineup against Victoria for his second career WHL game. He ended the game with two shots and an even plus/minus rating. The Winnipeg product has 17 points in 12 games with the Rink Hockey Academy this season.

Glass, Kral score in WJC

On the last day of round robin play at the World Juniors, a couple WHLers found the scoresheet.

Spokane’s Filip Kral scored an empty net goal to seal a 4-0 win over Denmark, the goal marked the first of the tournament for the defenseman. The Toronto Maple Leafs fifth rounder has seven points in 17 WHL games this season.

Portland Winterhawks captain Cody Glass scored Canada’s only goal in their 2-1 loss to Russia. The Golden Knights prospect ends the round robin with six points in four games going into their quarter final match up against Finland.

Three Stars of the Night

1st Star: Moose Jaw’s Brayden Tracey’s hat trick led the Warriors to a 3-1 win over the Brandon Wheat Kings.

2nd Star: Portland’s Ryan Hughes put up a goal and three assists in the Winterhawks’ 6-3 win over Seattle. The goal marked Hughes’ third straight goal on New Years Eve.

3rd Star: Seattle’s Zack Andrusiak scored two goals in their loss to Portland. With those goals, it gives Andrusiak six goals in his last two games…both games against Portland.

Honourable Mentions

Victoria’s D-Jay Jerome had a goal and an assist in the Royals’ overtime win against Kootenay….Portland’s Joachim Blichfeld put up two goals and an assist in their win over Seattle….Tri-City’s Parker AuCoin scored two goals and an assist in the Americans’ 6-1 win over Spokane.

Troubling Moments

Thunderbirds defenseman Cade McNelly received a five minute major and a game misconduct for cross checking for this incident against Portland.

Another unfortunate incident coming from Seattle, with a knee on knee hit from the Thunderbirds center Matthew Wedman which he received a five minute major and a game misconduct as well in the same game. The league will certainly look at both incidents and will decide on proper supplemental discipline.
