CHL looking for a full-time president 

The Canadian Hockey League is looking for its first full-time president, to start in the 2019-20 season. David Branch had been serving in the role on a part-time basis while serving as the OHL commissioner.

“The CHL, our member leagues and clubs are committed to the best
interest of our players both on and off the ice, contributing to the
communities in which we play and creating a great experience for our
fans. The time has come for the CHL to have a full-time president who will focus
on continuing to grow and expand our programs. Gilles Courteau, Ron Robison and I look forward to working with the new president and continuing to grow the game and the experience for our key stakeholders: our players,” Branch said in a press release.

The CHL says an outside firm will be conducting the search on behalf of the league and they expect it to be concluded prior to the 2019/20 season.

Tendeck wins CHL Goaltender of the Week

For a second consecutive week, a WHL goaltender is taking home the CHL goaltender of the week awards. Vancouver Giants’ netminder and Arizona Coyotes prospect David Tendeck is this week’s winner thanks to a 2-0-0-0 record, 1.50 goals-against-average and .947 save percentage. Also nominated for the award this week was Samuel Harvey of the QMJHL’s Rouyn-Noranda Huskies and Ottawa 67’s netminder and Vancouver Canucks prospect Michael DiPietro from the OHL.

Oil Kings, Chiefs victorious in Game 3 of respective Conference final series

The Edmonton Oil Kings and Spokane Chiefs both pulled out big wins on Tuesday night in the WHL. The Oil Kings took a 2-1 series lead with a 5-1 win over the Prince Albert Raiders and the Chiefs avoided being placed on the brink of elimination with a thrilling 3-2 victory against the Vancouver Giants in overtime.

Preliminary action wraps at U-18 World Championships

It was the final day of preliminary action at the U-18 World Championships with four games taking place. Canada continued its perfect run in the tournament with a 6-2 victory over the Czech Republic. Captain Peyton Krebs (Winnipeg ICE) had a goal while Dylan Cozens (Lethbridge Hurricanes) had an assist in the victory. Saskatoon Blades goaltender Nolan Maier stopped 23 of the 25 shots he faced to improve his tournament record to 2-0.

On the Czech side, Martin Lang (Kamloops Blazers), Matej Toman (Prince George Cougars) and Simon Kubicek (Seattle Thunderbirds) were held off the scoresheet. Both teams have advanced to the quarterfinals on Thursday which will see Canada take on Latvia and the Czech Republic take on Sweden.

Elsewhere, a Russian team that features Nikita Sedov (Regina Pats) fell 3-0 to Sweden. They’ll advance to the quarterfinals to take on a Belarussian team that features Yegor Buyalski (Moose Jaw Warriors) and Danila Palivko (Lethbridge Hurricanes).

Dewar to join Iowa Wild

It appears Everett Silvertips forward Connor Dewar is set to join the AHL’s Iowa Wild on an amateur try-out for their Calder Cup Playoff run although a move has not officially been announced yet. In 68 regular season and playoff games with the Silvertips, Dewar had 41 goals and 50 assists. Dewar is entering his overage season next year and could still return to the Silvertips but it appears likely that he will turn pro in the Minnesota Wild’s system.

Lajoie named Head Coach of OHA Edmonton Midget Prep Team

Serge Lajoie, who was recently let go by the WHL’s Kamloops Blazers, did not have to wait long to find a new job as he’s been hired to be the head coach of OHA Edmonton’s Midget Prep Team. Lajoie spent one season with the Blazers and had a 28-32-6 record. Lajoie also played seven games for the Blazers in the 1986-87 season and had two points.

WHL alumni record big career milestones

Nick Henry (194 games played, 78 goals and 126 assists with the Lethbridge Hurricanes and Regina Pats) suited up for his first career Calder Cup playoff game with the AHL’s Colorado Eagles.

Tanner Kaspick (216 GP, 59 G, 100 A with the Brandon Wheat Kings and Victoria Royals) scored his first pro playoff goal with the ECHL’s Tulsa Oilers over the weekend.

Nassen signs with Vaxjo Lakers

Linus Nassen (106 GP, 8 G, 64 A with the Medicine Hat Tigers) has signed with the Växjö Lakers of the SHL for the 2019-20 season.

First Star: Edmonton’s Vince Loschiavo had two goals and one assist.

Second Star: Edmonton’s Captain Trey Fix-Wolansky had two assists.

Third Star: Spokane’s Eli Zummack had a goal and an assist on six shots.
