Daily Dose of the Dub: Canada Red’s game delayed at U17 Challenge; Anders and Gauthier shutdown opponents

-After Russia flew out to a 3-0 lead at each team’s first games at the World U17 Hockey Challenge in Quispamis, New Brunswick, Canada Red came back. Portland’s Seth Jarvis scored in the second with an assist going to Brandon’s Ridly Greig and Seattle’s Payton Mount added another in the third period off a set up by Jarvis.

The power then went out with about eight minutes left, delaying the ending to the game.

The game will start again 12pm AST on Sunday (9am PST).

Canada Black plays Canada White at 4pm AST.

Three stars of the night:

  1. Ethan Anders – The 2000-born goalie for the Red Deer Rebels got his second career shutout, stopping all 34 shots from the Calgary Hitmen in a 1-0 win.
  2. Taylor Gauthier – First career shutout for the 2001-born Prince George Cougars. His 34 saves against the Seattle Thunderbirds gave them a 2-0 win – their second straight win over the visiting T-birds.
  3. Nick Henry – The Colorado Avalanche prospect and Regina Pats winger had two goals and an assist for three points. His second goal was the game-winner in his squad’s 6-5 comeback win over the Saskatoon Blades.

Honorable mentions:

Keenan Taphorn notched two goals as the Moose Jaw Warriors pulled away from the Kootenay ICE 5-1… Isaac Poulter turned away 42-of-45 shots as the Swift Current Broncos got their second straight overtime win – this time over the Edmonton Oil Kings 4-3… Shane Farkas helped make it two straight wins over the Victoria Royals for his Portland Winterhawks. This time he stopped 34-of-35 as the home team edged the Royals 2-1… Kyle Topping set up the tying goal in the third period and then scored the game-winner in the Kelowna Rockets 4-3 victory over the Brandon Wheat Kings…Three assists for hulking Everett Silvertips defenseman Sahvan Khaira as his team bounced back with a win over the Spokane Chiefs 6-2… David Tendeck stopped 29-of-30 shots as the Vancouver Giants edged the Kamloops Blazers 2-1.

Troubling moments:

-The penalty that set up Topping’s game-winner was a five-minute major charging call on Brandon’s Connor Gutenberg. He was also assessed a game misconduct.
