Pats acquire Chorney from Broncos for McGinley 

The Regina Pats have acquired forward Carter Chorney from the Swift Current Broncos for defenseman Sam McGinley. Chorney is an 18-year-old forward from Sherwood Park who was originally drafted by the Spokane Chiefs in the 2016 WHL Bantam Draft. He’s played 120 games in the WHL with the Chiefs and Broncos and has notched 17 goals and 16 assists. McGinley is a 17-year-old defenseman from Calgary who was drafted in the fifth round of 2017 WHL Bantam Draft. He’s played 11 games in the WHL and has one assist.

Novak suspended eight games

Kelowna Rockets forward Pavel Novak has been suspended for eight games for checking Kamloops Blazers forward Kyrell Sopotyk from behind. His suspension will kick in this Saturday when the two clubs face-off in a rematch. He’ll be eligible to return on December 10th against the Brandon Wheat Kings. However, as pointed out by Larry Fisher of The Hockey Writers, Novak may have already reported to the Czech Republic for training camp ahead of the 2020 World Junior Hockey Championship by that point so we may not see him back in the Rockets lineup until the new year.

Sopotyk out “up to eight weeks”

Meanwhile, we learned on Wednesday that Kamloops Blazers forward Kyrell Sopotyk suffered a separated shoulder on the hit and will be out for up to eight weeks.

WHL reschedules Pats-Broncos game

After last Friday’s game between the Regina Pats and Swift Current Broncos had to be postponed due to a malfunction with the ice plant, the WHL had to find a new date for the game to take place. That date has now been decided as the game has been rescheduled for next Tuesday, November 19th at the Brandt Centre.

WHL beats Russia in Game Five of CHL-Russia Series

It was the WHL’s turn to take on the Russians in Game Five of the annual CHL-Russia Series. It was the blueliners who starred for the WHL with Vancouver Giants defenseman Bowen Byram tying things late in the third period and Lethbridge Hurricanes defenseman Calen Addison scoring the OT winner as Team WHL defeated Russia 2-1. The final game of the series goes tonight.

Four WHLers make ‘CHL Team of the Week’

The WHL is a dominant force on this week’s CHL Team of the Week with Medicine Hat Tigers forward James Hamblin, Prince George Cougars defenseman Cole Moberg, Edmonton Oil Kings defenseman Matthew Robertson and Vancouver Giants goaltender Trent Miner on the team.

Hamblin leads the way up front having registered three goals and five assists in three games. On the blueline, Moberg had two goals and four assists while Robertson had one goal and four assists in three games each. In net, Miner posted a 1-0-0-1 record with a .964 save percentage and 0.96 GAA in two games.

Silvertips rise in CHL rankings

The CHL Weekly Rankings were released on Wednesday with the Everett Silvertips rising to the #4 spot. The Prince Albert Raiders fell down to #5 while the Edmonton Oil Kings dropped to #6. The Lethbridge Hurricanes and Kamloops Blazers each earned honourable mention.

NHL Central Scouting Updates “Players to Watch List”

NHL Central Scouting updated its “Players to Watch List” on Monday. A total of 52 WHL players are on the most recent version of the list, compared to 44 on the Preliminary list in October.

Players whose stock rose

  • Brandon Wheat Kings goaltender Ethan Kruger went from not being listed to a ‘C’
  • Everett Silvertips forward Gage Goncalves went from not being listed to a ‘C’
  • Kamloops Blazers forward Connor Zary went from a ‘B’ to an ‘A’
  • Prince Albert Raiders forward Ilya Usau is now a ‘C’ after not being listed
  • Red Deer Rebels forward Ben King went from not being listed to a ‘C’
  • Saskatoon Blades forward Kyle Crnkovic went from not being listed to a ‘C’
  • Saskatoon Blades forward Tristen Robins went from not being listed to a ‘C’
  • Spokane Chiefs forward Bear Hughes made the list as a ‘C’
  • Winnipeg ICE forward Owen Pederson made the list as a ‘C’
  • Winnipeg ICE forward Benjamin Zloty made the list as a ‘C’

Wheat Kings prospect sign NLI with Wisconsin

Brandon Wheat Kings prospect Anthony Kehrer signed his National Letter of Intent with the University of Wisconsin Badgers on Wednesday. Drafted in the second round of the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft by the Wheat Kings, Kehrer has been playing with the USHL’s Sioux City Musketeers where he has one assist in 12 games this season.

Dowling scores first NHL Goal

Playing in his 33rd NHL game, Justin Dowling (280 GP, 81 G, 161 A with the Swift Current Broncos) scored his first NHL goal for the Dallas Stars on Wednesday night against his hometown Calgary Flames.

Bourke signs a one-year contract extension in Germany

Troy Bourke (276 GP, 84 G, 152 A with the Prince George Cougars from 2009-14) has signed a one-year contract extension with the Schwenninger Wild Wilds of the German DEL. A former third-round pick of the Colorado Avalanche in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, Bourke has five goals and nine assists in 14 games this season.

Mother to De La Gorgendiere passes away 

Some sad news to pass along as the Saskatoon Blades announced that Marla Meginbir, mom to Blades forward Aidan De La Gorgendiere passed away after a two-year battle with cancer.
