Daily Dose of the Dub: BC and Alberta get wins at CWG; Johnston gets 350th win in playoff clincher

CWG Day 2

Day 2: BC (1-1-0-0) defeated Saskatchewan (1-1-0-0) 4-3Alberta (1-0-1-0) took down Manitoba (1-1-0-0) 6-5, Yukon (0-3-0-0) went 0-2 on Sunday with losses to Nunavut and Northwest Territories and NWT (1-2-0-0) went 1-1 on Day Two with a loss to PEI and a 4-2 win over Yukon.

Winterhawks clinch playoff spot in Johnston’s milestone night

The Portland Winterhawks became the fourth team to clinch a spot in the WHL Playoffs with a 5-2 win over Seattle, making it the tenth consecutive season. During that span, the Winterhawks have been to a Memorial Cup final, and four straight WHL finals from 2010/11 – 2013/14, winning it in 2012/13.

The win also marked head coach Mike Johnston’s 350th WHL victory of his storied coaching career. He was named Portland’s head coach ahead of the 2008-09 season, leaving the Los Angeles Kings as an associate coach. He was the Winterhawks’ coach until the ’13/’14 season when he left to take the Pittsburgh Penguins job where he lasted a season and a half, going 58-37-15, before returning to Portland for the ’16/’17 season.

Blichfeld scores 100th

Portland Winterhawks forward Joachim Blichfeld scored his 100th WHL goal with his third goal of the night in their win over Seattle. The San Jose Sharks prospect is having an incredible season, being just two points and two goals away from being the first player to hit 50 goals and 100 points this season. He has 98 points (48G, 50A) in 57 games this campaign and has 212 points (100G, 112A) in just 176 career games.

Three Stars of the Night

1st Star: Portland’s Joachim Blichfeld had a hat trick, an assist and a whopping 15 shots on goal in a 5-2 win over Seattle.

2nd Star: Portland captain Cody Glass had three assists.

3rd Star: Seattle’s Cole Schwebius had 47 saves on 52 shots in a losing effort to Portland.
