Daily Dose of the Dub: Americans sign Melnyk, Blazers sign Minten and more

Melnyk signs with Americans

Rhett Melnyk has signed his WHL Education Contract with the Tri-City Americans. A second-round pick in 2019, Melnyk is currently playing with the Fort Saskatchewan Rangers Midget AAA team in the AMHL. He’s notched ten goals and ten assists through 25 games.

Blazers sign Minten

The Kamloops Blazers now have four of their top five picks from the 2019 WHL Bantam Draft locked up with the signing of 2019 fourth-round pick Fraser Minten. Minten is currently fourth in CSSHL Midget Prep scoring among 15-year-olds with 14 goals and 25 assists in 23 games with West Vancouver Academy this season.

Pats recall Armstrong

Exactly a week after signing with Regina, Easton Armstrong has joined the Regina Pats for this weekend’s games against the Lethbridge Hurricanes and Saskatoon Blades. The son of former NHLer Derek Armstrong has played 20 games with the LA Jr. Kins U16 team where he’s recorded 17 goals and 11 assists.

Kope returns, Alexander and Mcindoe out with injuries

David Kope returned to the Edmonton Oil Kings lineup after being out of the lineup since January 11th. Jacson Alexander and Ethan Mcindoe were out of the lineup with undisclosed injuries.

Oil Kings break a franchise record

The Edmonton Oil Kings broke their franchise record for shots on goal on Wednesday night after they put a staggering 62 shots on the Swift Current Broncos net. Goaltender Isaiah DiLaura stopped 57 of them, but the Oil Kings went on to win 5-3.

Pelletier returns to Broncos lineup

On the Swift Current side, forward Raphael Pelletier made his return after missing the last eight games. Justin Svenson, who normally lines up as a forward, was listed as a defenseman.

Finley returns for Chiefs

Jack Finley was back in the lineup for the Spokane Chiefs on Wednesday night after travel issues returning from the CHL Top Prospects game kept him out over the weekend.

Stringer returns for Lethbridge

Zack Stringer was back in Lethbridge’s lineup after missing the last two games with an illness.

The Portland Winterhawks (#2), Edmonton Oil Kings (#5), Kamloops Blazers (#7), Everett Silvertips (#8) represented the WHL on the weekly CHL Power Rankings. The Medicine Hat Tigers once again earned themselves honourable mention.

Habscheid to be pied in the face PA Carlton Crushes game

Carlton Comprehensive Public High School in Prince Albert will be holding their annual PA Carlton Crushes Cancer game and if enough money is raised Prince Albert Raiders Head Coach Marc Habscheid will be pied in the face. We can confirm that our Vancouver Giants beat writer Stephen Hawco, who still hasn’t fully recovered from last year’s WHL final result will be making a donation. WHL Prospects win bronze at Youth Olympics

Nate Danielson (Brandon Wheat Kings), Matthew Savoie (Winnipeg ICE), Denton Mateychuk (Moose Jaw Warriors) Mats Lindgren (Kamloops Blazers) and Dylan Ernst (Kamloops Blazers) will be coming back from this year’s Youth Olympics with bronze medals after a 4-2 win for Canada over Finland on Wednesday. Dylan Silverstein (Medicine Hat Tigers) captured a silver medal with the Americans.

Spurgeon confirms incident while a member of the Spokane Chiefs

As per The Athletic Reporter Michael Russo, Minnesota Wild defenseman Jared Spurgeon confirmed the story that TSN’s Winnipeg Jets analyst Kevin Sawyer, who was an assistant coach with the Spokane Chiefs, told on-air earlier this month. As the story goes, during Spurgeon’s time with Spokane he was saran wrapped to a pillar in the arena, about six feet in the air as players sang Happy Birthday to him to celebrate his 16th birthday. Spurgeon tells the Athletic that the event wasn’t a big deal then and isn’t now and that Sawyer did not participate in the incident and called him to apologize earlier this month.

Second Star: Lethbridge’s Olivier Okuliar tallied two goals and added one assist

Third Star: Spokane’s Lukas Parik made 32 saves on 34 saves in a 3-2 win over Everett.

Swift Current’s Isaiah Dilaura made 57 saves in a 5-3 loss to the Edmonton Oil Kings.
