Daily Dose of the Dub: 48 WHL players on NHL Central Scouting midterm rankings; Hughes leaves Hurricanes

WHL has 41 skaters and seven goalies listed by Central Scouting:

-NHL Central Scouting revealed their midterm rankings on Monday and the WHL was heavily featured on the list.

Below I have a table of the 41 WHL skaters and seven WHL goalies ranked by Central Scouting. I have also listed those that were at some point ranked by Central Scouting, but have fallen off. Be aware that on this list they are ranked on only includes those playing in North America and does not include players in Europe.

Notes:

-There are four WHL players who have just continued to rise, the more NHL scouts get to see them. Brett Leason is the most known of this group as he came from being unranked back in October, to being listed as a “C” skater in November, to now being ranked 17th overall among NA skaters. His performance at the World Junior had a positive impact on his ranking.

Adam Beckman was off the radar completely back in October and November and now is all the way up to 44th overall. He’s the favorite for WHL Western Conference Rookie of the Year and has 35 points in 43 games for his Spokane Chiefs.

Lassi Thomson has gone from being ranked as a “C” skater to “B” in November, all the way to 14th overall among skaters. That is going from a fifth, sixth or seventh round selection, all the way to being in the running to be a first round pick – based on the rankings. He has 29 points so far from the blue line for the Rockets.

Mads Sogaard seems to have recovered from letting in so many goals at the World Juniors for Denmark. He was under siege for much of the tournament and must have done enough to warrant being the top ranked WHL goalie among NA netminders.

Alex Swetlikoff also warrants a mention as he came over from the BCHL and is ranked 217th by Central Scouting now.

Dillon Hamaliuk and Jacson Alexander have been relegated to the “LV” or Limited Views category as Hamaliuk is out for the season and Alexander has missed time this season for Edmonton. He has played in just 15 games. Somewhat strange that Hamaliuk had limited viewings as he played for exactly half a sesason before being injured.

Sogaard, Taylor Gauthier, Bown Byram, Jake Lee, Kaedan Korczak, Thomson, Matthew Robertson, Dylan Cozens, Leason, Peyton Krebs, Nolan Foote, Sasha Mutala, Josh Williams and Oleg Zaytsev will have a chance to impact their rankings more this Wednesday as they play in Red Deer at the CHL Top Prospects Game.

Hughes leaves the Hurricanes:

-The Lethbridge Hurricanes put out a joint press release on Monday with 1999-born goalie Liam Hughes. In the release, the team and the goalie announced that Hughes was leaving hockey for “personal reasons.”

Hughes was acquired by Lethbridge, along with an eighth round pick in 2019 for 2000-born forward Keltie Jeri-Leon, 2001-born forward Michael Horon and a fourth round pick in 2019.

Tetachuk

The 19-year-old netminder played in six games for the Hurricanes, winning two and posting a 3.44 GAA and 0.892 save percentage.

He played in seven games for the Edmonton Oil Kings back in 2016-17. They were the team that drafted him in the seventh round of the 2014 WHL Bantam Draft.

Seattle then picked up Hughes from Edmonton for a fourth round pick in 2019.

He was in net for Seattle for 65 regular season and five playoff games, winning a combined 27.

With Hughes’ departure, Lethbridge called up 2002-born goalie Bryan Thomson, who they picked up in the second round of last May’s draft. He will serve as backup for 2001-born netminder Carl Tetachuk.

Tschigerl and Peters sent back to their midget teams:

-After playing in his first WHL game Sunday, Calgary’s first round pick from the 2018 WHL Bantam Draft (fourth overall), was sent back to OHA Edmonton Prep.

Brayden Peters was also sent back to his midget club, the Lethbridge Hurricanes Midget AAA. He backed up Jack McNaughton over the weekend.

As of now, the Hitmen only have McNaughton and Carl Stankowski on their roster and Stankowski was listed as out week-to-week in the last weekly report.

Pesenti down and Woodside up for the Pats:

-In Regina, Matthew Pesenti was sent back to the Saskatoon Blazers of the SMHL. He played in two games during his call up, stopping a total of 12-of-17 shots.

In his place, Carter Woodside was called up. The 2001-born goalie was an acquisition from the Kootenay ICE in the offseason and has played in one game this season for the Pats.

With Max Paddock still out indefinitely with an illness, Dean McNabb will continue to get a majority of starts and now Woodside will spell him as needed.

Rattie waived by Oilers:

-Former WHL champion and Portland Winterhawks sniper Ty Rattie was waived by the Edmonton Oilers. He had two goals and six assists for eight points for the Oilers in 29 games this season. In 78 NHL games, he has 11 goals and 16 assists for 27 points.

He played for Portland from 2008-13 and is the all time leader in wHL playoff goals.
