Matchup No. 13
Spokane Chiefs vs Edmonton Oil Kings

MT – A franchise that started out in Kelowna in 1982 and moved south to Spokane in 1985 wears the ever popular red, white, and blue. A very traditionalist jersey taking all its inspiration from the Montreal Canadiens. Simple lines and simple shoulder yokes. The original Chiefs logo left a lot to be desired, however it only hung around for about four years. Spokane has kept the S C feather logo for pretty much their entire history in eastern Washington. It’s a simple logo that fits well with their traditional jerseys, the S split to also form a C in the top is one of those little things that make this logo great. The Canadiens have barely changed their jerseys in their entire history so it stands to reason that emulating such a historic look wouldn’t be a bad thing for your team.

MT – The Oil Kings squeaked by Everett in the first round by a single vote in what was the biggest shock to me in the opening round. They are definitely going to need more than 16 votes to get by Spokane in this round though.

Matchup No. 14
Medicine Hat Tigers vs Portland Winterhawks

MT – The Tigers had an easy first round topping the Kootenay Ice by 23 votes. The vintage tiger may be in for a much tougher round against an NHL caliber jersey.
Portland Winterhawks

MT – It’s the Chicago Blackhawks, or rather the Portland Winterhawks. Founded in Edmonton in 1951 with the WCHL the franchise moved to Portland and became the Winter Hawks in 1976. In 2009 the team announced a major name change, changing from Winter Hawks to Winterhawks. The story of the jerseys says that the first Portland team wore a set of used Chicago Blackhawks uniforms obtained from connections between the owners of the teams. Portland would eventually change the shoulder patch from the C with crossed tomahawks to a P with crossed tomahawks. Aside from that minor difference these are Chicago jerseys. Simple traditional jerseys much along the lines of another Original 6 NHL team that is being imitated in this weeks matchups. To me it’s one thing to imitate a professional team, it’s another thing to be pretty much a carbon copy of one.
