Edmonton Oil Kings ink Ethan Peters to WHL standard player agreement

As the WHL inches closer to getting back on the ice, teams are making necessary transactions to sort out their rosters. The Edmonton Oil Kings have put the finishing touches on an offseason transaction, as they have signed 17-year-old right-handed defender, Ethan Peters to a WHL standard player agreement.

Career statistics

Peters, who hails from Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, has good size for a defenseman at 6-foot-2 and 170-pounds. Based on scouting reports from the Oil Kings website, Peters is a smart, two-way defender who can contribute at both ends of the ice and play with a competitive edge.

He has added some impressive accolades to his name within the last two years of his hockey career. In 2018-19, Peters was named to the CSSHL U16 All-Academic Team and was also crowned the CSSHL U16 WHL Scholastic Player of the Year after finishing with 18 points in 35 games with Prairie Hockey Academy.

In 2019-20, Peters played U18 AAA for the Moose Jaw Warriors in the SMAAAHL and served as an assistant captain. He notched 27 points in 41 regular-season games and added another five points in six postseason matchups. The young defenseman has since returned to the Warriors for the start of the 2020-21 hockey season, where he currently has five assists in six games thus far.

What the future holds

Peters went undrafted in the 2018 WHL Bantam Draft. He was later identified and listed by the Oil Kings. This makes for an inspiring story of a player who has worked hard and earned a chance at the next elite level through sheer determination and focus.

He will have a great opportunity in Edmonton to further advance his stock in the organization and make a solid impression with the coaching staff when WHL training camps get underway in the near future. We very well could see Ethan Peters suiting up in an Oil Kings uniform quite soon.
