Warriors sweep Wheat Kings

The Moose Jaw Warriors scored with just 44 seconds left on Saturday night as they completed a home-and-home sweep against the Brandon Wheat Kings.

In a game where they were outshot and gave up the game’s first goal, Moose Jaw came up clutch when needed, and they secured another win to begin their season.

Just four games into the season, Luka Burzan scored his third goal, putting the Wheat Kings up 1-0,  11:47 into the game, and they held a 1-0 lead after 20.

On the power play early in the second — very early — Moose Jaw tied it up. Just 38 seconds into the period, Jadon Joseph scored his second goal of the season. Ryder Korczak and Carson Denomie had the assists on the goal.

Tied at one, Brandon bounced back. After serving a one-game suspension, Ben McCartney scored his second goal of the season, 8:46 into the second. The power-play goal was assisted by Chad Nychuk and Braden Schneider.

That McCartney goal was the final goal of the second.

In the third, it was Moose Jaw’s time to steal the game. First up, it was a man who’s having quite the season so far. Keenan Taphorn scored his fourth of the campaign to tie the game up at the 9:44 mark. Braden Miller and Ryder Korczak notched the assists.

After that, the game seemed destined for overtime. The clock continued to tick down, but it didn’t tick all the way down with an even score.

With just 44 seconds left, Ryder Korczak beat Ethan Kruger, who was making his first start of the season, to win the game for Moose Jaw in front of a solid crowd at Mosaic Place. Carson Denomie had the lone assist.

The win moves Moose Jaw to 3-1 this season. Brandon, meanwhile, is 1-3.

Brandon will welcome Vancouver and Edmonton to Westoba Place next Friday and Saturday respectively. On Sunday, the club makes the trip to Saskatoon to play the Blades.

Moose Jaw will continue their four-game homestand next Sunday against Regina.
