Warriors rally for two overtime wins

A pair of third-period comebacks turned into overtime wins and just like that the Moose Jaw Warriors are riding a five-game win streak and have points in seven straight games.

Saturday afternoon the Warriors trailed 2-0 with 3:16 left in the third period and turned it around to earn a 3-2 overtime win over the Lethbridge Hurricanes. Friday night, they beat the Edmonton Oil Kings 4-3 in overtime.

The Warriors (12-5-3-1) are no stranger to overtime or close games. They’ve played a league-high eight overtime games and their ability to win close games goes a long way to explain their surge up the East Division standings. Moose Jaw is now 9-1-3-1 in one-goal games this season.

Moose Jaw has the third-best record in the Eastern Conference.

Brayden Tracey

Brayden Tracey was the overtime hero against Lethbridge as he scored his eighth goal of the season and took the rookie scoring lead with his 22nd point of the season.

After two tight, scoreless periods, Lethbridge grabbed the lead when a deflected shot found Taylor Ross at the side of the net 4:57 into the third period. Keltie Jeri-Leon doubled the lead five minutes later. They were the Hurricanes’ first two shots of the third period.

The Warriors had pulled goalie Adam Evanoff with four minutes left when they drew a penalty. Josh Brook scored on the power play to give the Warriors some life and Tristin Langan was able to bank a shot off of the blocker of goalie Reece Klassen with 1:25 left in the third to tie the game.

Tracey took a penalty in overtime, but the Warriors killed it off and he came out of the box to be the OT hero.

Langan had three assists on the night and Tracey and Jett Woo each had two points.

Langan was the overtime hero a night earlier as they caught the Oil Kings scrambling in their zone and he was left all alone to tuck the game winner past Dylan Myskiw.

Tristin Langan

Edmonton took the lead three separate times, but weren’t able to close out the victory.

They led 2-1 heading into the third period when Langan fed Justin Almeida for a short-handed goal. It was Almeida’s first game back after missing four straight contests after being injured in the Canada-Russia Super Series.

Former Warrior Vince Loschiavo scored on the same power play to restore Edmonton’s one-goal lead. Loschiavo has 12 goals this season.

Kaeden Taphorn scored his first goal for the Warriors when he deflected Josh Brook’s point shot home with 4:05 left in the third.

Langan got the Warriors’ first goal and had a three-point night. Brook had three assists and was a plus-four.

Trey Fix-Wolansky had a goal and two assists for Edmonton and Matthew Robertson had a goal and an assist in the loss.

The Oil Kings were 1-for-4 on the power play, while the Warriors didn’t earn a power play opportunity.

The Warriors are facing a challenging week as they prepare to play four games in five nights on the road in the Central Division.
