Daily Dose of the Dub: Hurricanes acquire Kolle; Fleury signs with Canadiens; ICE and Hurricanes release imports

Portland ships Kolle to Lethbridge

The Lethbridge Hurricanes sent a fifth-round draft pick to Portland on Thursday in exchange for forward Ty Kolle. The 18-year old registered a career-high 14 points last season, and will function as a depth piece for the Central Division favourites.

Habs sign Fleury to ELC

The Montreal Canadiens have inked Regina Pats’ defenseman Cale Fleury to a three-year entry-level contract. The signing effectively ends Fleury’s time in the WHL, as the Habs are expected to assign their 2017 third-rounder to their AHL affiliate, the Laval Rocket who he was already attending a try out with. The move will settle Regina’s 20-year-olds situation, where they’ll go forward with defensemen Aaron Hyman, Brady Pouteau and Liam Schioler. They also placed 20-year-old forward Bryce Platt on waivers earlier in the day.

ICE part ways with Kohler

The Kootenay ICE released Swiss forward Gillian Kohler on Thursday. In his lone WHL season, he potted eight goals and 11 assists in 2017-18. The ICE will keep defensemen Martin Bodak and Valtteri Kakkonen as their two import players for this season. Bodak is also an overage player.

Lethbridge places Schmid on waivers

The ICE weren’t the only team trimming their import players on Thursday. Joining them were the Lethbridge Hurricanes, who placed Swiss goalie Akira Schmid on waivers. In his lone WHL appearance, he allowed an ugly seven goals on 27 shots in a game against Brandon last week.

Hitmen reassign pair

The Calgary Hitmen cut down their roster on Thursday, reassigning Orca Wiesblatt and goalie Matthew Armitage. Armitage, 19, was the backup netminder last season and posted a 4-7 record in 19 games to go with an .890 save percentage and 3.55 GAA.
