Warriors’ Mateychuk added to Team Canada U18s

Moose Jaw Warriors defenceman Denton Mateychuk has been added to Team Canada’s roster ahead of the upcoming 2021 IIHF Under-18 World Championship in Texas, Hockey Canada announced Monday.

Mateychuk, 16, has been a key part of the Moose Jaw defence-corps this year, and has scored two goals and added seven assists in 16 games in his first full-time season.

The Dominion City, MB native replaces Winnipeg ICE blueliner Carson Lambos, who has missed all but two games of the campaign with injury.

Mateychuk was selected in the first round, 11th overall by the Warriors in the 2019 Western Hockey League draft out of the Eastman Selects AAA in his native Manitoba.

He has represented Canada once before, at the Under-16 level for the 2020 Youth Olympic Games in Switzerland.

Canada’s full roster, for the U18s set to begin Apr. 26, can be found here.

Team Canada is also set to include Regina Pats star Connor Bedard, who is still expected to play despite the recent passing of his grandfather.

Mateychuk, who is one of nine WHLers listed on the squad, has 11 points in 23 career games for the Warriors.
