Raiders and Oil Kings swap defensemen

The Prince Albert Raiders and the Edmonton Oil Kings announced they had made a trade on Sunday afternoon. Headed to Prince Albert is 17-year-old defenseman Ross Stanley. The return to Edmonton is Graydon Gotaas and a conditional fifth-round pick in the 2024 WHL Prospects Draft.

Stanley, from Yellowhead, AB, has played 21 WHL contests and has collected one assist. He was a second-round pick at the 2019 WHL Draft.

Gotaas, from Camrose, AB, has played in 20 WHL contests and has one goal and three assists. He was also a second-round pick at the 2019 WHL Draft.

Saturday firsts

Pasternak and Nguyen earn first goals

With the Portland Winterhawks trailing 3-0, Marcus Nguyen tallied his first WHL goal at 7:19 of the second period to cure the comeback. On a powerplay late in the third period, Dawson Pasternak scored his first WHL goal to tie the game at three. The Winterhawks went on to win the game 4-3.

Nguyen, 17, is from Calgary, AB. He was an 11th round pick of the Winterhawks at the 2019 WHL Draft.

Pasternak, 18, is from Winnipeg, MB. He was selected in the fourth round of the 2018 WHL Draft.

Alscher’s first WHL goal is a game-winner

With 2:55 remaining in the period and the score tied at three, the Portland Winterhawks’ Marek Alscher scored his first WHL goal in style as the game’s eventual winning goal over the Tri-City Americans.

The 17-year-old defenseman from Kladno, Czech Republic was playing in his fifth WHL game. The Winterhawks selected him 26th overall at the 2021 CHL Import Draft.

Moritz scores first WHL goal, Chadwick earns first WHL win

With the game between the Saskatoon Blades and Moose Jaw Warriors tied at one, Moritz Elias put a powerplay marker into the back of the net to give the Blades a 2-1 lead at 16:20 of the first period. Ethan Chadwick made 25 saves on 28 shots to backstop the Blades to an eventual 4-3 win.

Elias, 17, from Augsburg, Germany, was the 107th overall pick at the 2021 CHL Import Draft. He was playing in his sixth WHL game,

Chadwick, 17, from Saskatoon, SK, was a third-round pick at the 2019 WHL Draft. He was playing in his second WHL game.

Streule nabs first WHL goal

With 8:23 left to play in the third period and the Winnipeg ICE up 5-3 over the Regina Pats, defenseman Maximilian Streule scored his first WHL goal. Winnipeg went on to win 6-3.

Streule, 17, from Switzerland, was the 65th overall pick at the 2021 CHL Import Draft. He was playing in his seventh WHL game.

Love earns first AHL win

Former Saskatoon Blades Head Coach and Everett Silvertips Assistant Coach Mitch Love has earned his first professional win as a head coach. Love moved onto the Stockton Heat of the AHL on July 12, 2021.

Love was also a defenseman in the Western Hockey League from 1999-2005. He eventually became the captain of the Everett Silvertips after starting his career with the Moose Jaw Warriors and making his way to the Swift Current Broncos.

Ross traded in the ECHL

23-year-old forward Taylor Ross (65 goals, 70 assists in 233 games with Spokane and Lethbridge from 2014-19) has been traded by the Norfolk Admiral to the Wichita Thunder.

Ross, from Kronau, SK, did not play in 2020-21 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He spent the 2019-20 season split between the Fort Wayne Komets (six goals, two assists in 24 games) and the Norfolk Admirals (three goals, seven assists in 19 games).

Wishart returns to Eispairaten

33-year-old defenseman Ty Wishart (33 goals, 128 assists in 262 games with Prince George and Moose Jaw 2004-08) has returned to Eispiraten Crimmitshau of the DEL2 for a third stint.

Wishart, who is from Belleville, ON, had been playing for Unia Oswiecim in Poland, where he recorded two goals and two assists through nine games. His previous stints with Eispiraten were in 2015-16 and 2019-20.

The San Jose Sharks selected Wishart 16th overall at the 2006 NHL Draft. He has 26 games of NHL experience including one goal and five assists.
