The first round of the SPHL’s playoffs begins on Wednesday, May 5th, and nine WHL alumni are taking part in the action. Isaac Johnson, Colton Heffley, Kenton Helgesen, Jared Bethune, Connor Sanvido, Stathis Soumelidis, Josh Thrower, Jamal Watson, and Kyle Becker will all take part. Seven alumni played this season for the Birmingham Bulls who did not qualify for the playoffs.

Defenseman Igor Merezhko (254GP, 11G, 88A with Lethbridge ’15-’19) has signed a contract extension with Rubin Tyumen of the VHL in Russia. Merezhko just completed his first season with the team, scoring three goals and adding 13 assists through 44 games. He also had one goal and six assists in 16 playoff games. The Hurricanes selected Merezhko 65th overall at the 2015 CHL Import Draft.

Defenseman Kale Clague (195GP, 26G, 141A with Brandon and Moose Jaw ’13-’18) has been reassigned to the Ontario Reign from the Los Angeles Kings. Through 18 games with the Kings, Clague has six assists. In 18 contests with the Reign, Clague has one goal and six assists. Clague was selected in the second round of the 2016 NHL Draft by the Kings. The Wheat Kings won the Ed Chynoweth Cup in 2015-16 with Clague manning the blueline.

Forward Nick Henry (194GP, 78G, 126A with Regina and Lethbridge ’16-’19) has been reassigned to the Utah Grizzlies following a call up to the NHL’s Colorado Avalanche taxi squad. Henry has played in 14 Colorado Eagles (AHL) games this season, he has three goals and one assist. He has also played in four games with the Utah Grizzlies (ECHL) scoring four goals and adding three assists. Henry was selected in the fourth round of the 2017 NHL Draft by the Avalanche.

Defenseman Josh Mahura (186GP, 41G, 90A with Red Deer and Regina ’14-’18) has been called up to serve on the Anaheim Ducks taxi squad. Mahura has played 11 games with the NHL club that drafted him in the third round in 2016, he has one goal and two assists. While with the Ducks AHL-affiliate, the San Diego Gulls, Mahura has five goals and 13 assists in 25 games.
Bettauer signs extension with Ravensburg Towerstars

Defenseman James Bettauer (212GP, 27G, 61A with Chilliwack, Prince Albert, and Medicine Hat ’08-’09, ’10-’12) has been signed to a contract extension by the Ravensburg Towerstars of the DEL2 in Germany. Bettauer is coming off of a 30 game season in which he scored 15 goals and added 15 assists. He had the most goals as a defenseman in the DEL2 in 2020-21.
