WHL names Jarvis player of the week

Portland Winterhawks forward Seth Jarvis was named WHL player of the week for the week ending May 9, 2021. The Carolina Hurricanes first-round pick in 2020 had seven points in three games last week including a hat trick against the Tri-City Americans. Jarvis now has 15 goals and 10 assists through 23 games this season.

WHL names Gauthier goaltender of the week

Prince George Cougars goaltender Taylor Gauthier was named WHL goaltender of the week for the week ending May 9, 2021. Gauthier, a native of Calgary, Alta., posted a record of 2-1-0-0 with a 1.01 goals-against average and a .963 save percentage. The highlight of the week was a 26 save shutout of the Vancouver Giants on May 5th. Gauthier is now 7-7-0-0 with a 2.65 GAA and .917 SV% this season.

Levis earns first WHL hat trick

2004-born Kamloops Blazers forward Connor Levis collected himself a hat trick in last night’s 10-2 win over the Kelowna Rockets. He also had two assists to pile up five points on the night. The 2019 first-round pick of the Blazers now has nine goals and five assists on the season.

Gricius commits to U of Calgary Dinos

Forward Jake Gricius (271GP, 71G, 89A with Portland ’16-’20) has committed to the University of Calgary Dinos for the 2021-22 season. Gricius played six games with the Allen Americans of the ECHL in 2020-21.

Scarlett signs extension with Dinamo Riga

Defenseman Reece Scarlett (276 GP, 25 G, 108 A with the Swift Current)  was signed to a contract extension by Dinamo Riga following the 2020-21 campaign. In 47 games, Scarlett scored twice and added 15 assists. Scarlett was a sixth-round 2011 NHL Draft pick of the New Jersey Devils.

Foucault departs Eisbaren Berlin, Boychuk earns extension

Forward Kris Foucault (195GP, 56G, 55A with Swift Current, Kootenay, and Calgary) has departed Eisbaren Berlin following one season with the team. Through 35 games, Foucault scored 18 goals and added 12 assists. In nine playoff games, he added one goal and four assists. Foucault won a WHL Championship with the Hitmen in 2009-10 and was a 2009 fourth-round NHL draft pick of the Minnesota Wild and managed to play one game with the NHL club. He also played for their AHL affiliate in Houston/Iowa.

Forward Zach Boychuk (237GP, 110G, 161A with Lethbridge ’05-’09) has signed an extension with the Eisbaren Berlin of the DEL. In 2020-21 Boychuk scored 12 goals and added 13 assists through 26 games. In eight playoff games, he had three goals and five assists. Boychuk has two gold medals at the IIHF World Junior Championships with Team Canada, two Spengler Cup Championships, and an NL Championship. Boychuk was the 14th overall selection at the 2008 NHL Draft by the Carolina Hurricanes. He is a veteran of 127 NHL games.

Thurkauf signs with HC Lugano

Forward Calvin Thurkauf (121GP, 51G, 64A with Kelowna) has signed with HC Lugano. Last season Thurkauf played in 22 games with EV Zug, scoring three goals and adding two assists. He was a seventh-round pick of the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2016. Thurkauf was the 59th overall pick at the 2015 CHL Import Draft.

Hrbas signs with HC Litvinov

Defenseman Marek Hrbas (196GP, 14G, 52A with Edmonton and Kamloops ’10-’13) has signed with HC Litvinov of the Czech League following two seasons with BK Mlada Boleslav. In 2020-21 Hrbas played 20 games and had three assists. He also added two assists in six playoff games. Hrbas was the 14th overall pick at the 2010 CHL Import Draft by the Oil Kings.

Broda signs with Villacher SV

Forward Joel Broda (330GP, 141G, 121A with Tri-City, Moose Jaw, and Calgary ’04-’10) has been signed by Villacher SV of ICEHL. In his only season with Graz99ers of the ICEHL in 2020-21, Broda scored 10 goals and added 14 assists through 46 games. Broda was a fifth-round pick of the Washington Capitals at the 2008 NHL Draft. He won an Ed Chynoweth Cup with the Hitmen in 2009-10.

Dumba nominated for NHL’s Masterton Trophy

Defenseman Matt Dumba (225GP, 59G, 92A with Red Deer and Portland ’09-’14) has been nominated for the NHL’s Bill Masterton Trophy, as awarded annually to the National Hockey League player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to ice hockey. Dumba has played parts of eight seasons with the Minnesota Wild and is one of the founders of the Hockey Diversity Alliance.

Priestner family purchases Saskatchewan Rush

Preistner Sports Corporation, which owns the Saskatoon Blades, has announced the purchase of the NLL (National Lacrosse League) franchise known as the Saskatchewan Rush. It is believed the acquisition was made to have cross-promotion between the two franchises and to help facilitate the building of a new downtown arena in Saskatoon.
