Regina Pats name leadership group

The Reinga Pats announced their leadership group for the 2020-21 season. 2001-born forward Logan Nijhoff (150GP, 26G, 31A) was named captain, while 2000-born defenseman Kyle Walker (163GP, 8G, 24A with Everett and Regina), 2001-born defenseman Ryker Evans (108GP, 8G, 34A), 2000-born forward Carson Denomie (198GP, 35G, 51A with Kamloops, Moose Jaw, and Regina) (home), and 2002-born forward Drew Englot (56GP, 12G, 6A) (away) were named alternate captains. Spokane Chiefs name leadership group

The Spokane Chiefs announced their leadership group for the 2020-21 season. 2000-born forward Eli Zummack (233GP, 61G, 156A) was named captain, while 2001-born forward Adam Beckman (132GP, 80G, 89A), 2002-born forward Jack Finley (131GP, 28G, 49A), 2000-born defenseman Matt Leduc (153GP, 4G, 21A), and 2001-born forward Cordel Larson (125GP, 22G, 35A) were named alternate captains.

WHL names Player and Goaltender of the Week

Forward Jayen Luypen was named WHL Player of the Week and goaltender Brayden Peters was named WHL Goaltender of the Week. Luypen, of the Edmonton Oil Kings, scored twice and added an assist in a home-and-home set with the Medicine Hat Tigers. Peters registered the WHL’s first shutout of the season in a 2-0 Calgary Hitmen win on Friday, March 5. He made 27 saves in the shutout and is now 1-0-0 on the season.

Tracey heads back to Victoria

Forward Brayden Tracey (123GP, 58G, 86A with Moose Jaw and Victoria) has been re-assigned to the Royals from the San Diego Gulls. Tracey is a 2019 first-round NHL Draft pick of the Anaheim Ducks. In 12 games this season with the Gulls, Tracey was held pointless. Last season in 52 games split between the Warriors and Royals, Tracey scored 22 goals and added 39 assists.

22 Pats games to be broadcast on AccessNow

DUBNetwork’s own Rod Pedersen and Darren Dupont will have the call of the 22 Regina Pats games being broadcast on AccessNOW in Saskatchewan. The duo will start with the Pats’ season-opening game on March 12 against the Prince Albert Raiders. This begins a nine-game March schedule on AccessNOW. 13 games will be broadcast in the month of April, concluding on April 27 against the Winnipeg ICE.

Johnson re-assigned to Blackhawks’ taxi squad

Forward Reese Johnson (187GP, 55G, 45A with Red Deer ’14-’19) has been re-assigned to the Chicago Blackhawks taxi squad from the Rockford IceHogs. Johnson has played three games with the Blackhawks this season, remaining pointless. With the IceHogs, Johnson has one assist in four games. Johnson is a signed, undrafted prospect of the Blackhawks.

Miner and Mutala returned to WHL, Woods signs pro tryout, Lewis recalled from Grizzlies

2001-born goaltender Trent Miner (69GP, 41-20-5, 2.56GAA, .909sv% with Vancouver) and 2001-born forward Sasha Mutala (198GP, 59G, 75A with Tri-City) have been returned to their respective WHL teams by the Colorado Eagles. Miner posted a 2-3-1 record with a 2.86 goals-against average and .903 save percentage in six games with the Eagles. Mutala played in four contests registering an assist. Both players are unsigned by the Colorado Avalanche who drafted them at the 2019 NHL draft.

Forward Riley Woods (230GP, 75G, 105A with Regina and Spokane) has signed a professional tryout with the Colorado Eagles. He has already played in five games with the team, scoring once and adding two assists. He has also played 14 games for the ECHL’s Utah Grizzlies, scoring four goals and adding 12 assists.

Forward Ty Lewis (190GP, 84G, 107A with Brandon ’14-’18) has been recalled by the Colorado Eagles from the Utah Grizzlies. In five games with the Grizzlies, Lewis has seven assists. Lewis has also played four games with the Eagles this season, he remains pointless. Lewis is a signed Colorado Avalance prospect.

Schneider reportedly headed to the University of Alberta

Goaltender Nick Schneider (202GP, 96-76-15, 3.42GAA, .891sv% with Regina, Medicine Hat, and Calgary ’13-’18) is reportedly joining the University of Alberta Golden Bears. The 23-year-old goaltender has spent the 2020-21 season split between the AHL’s Stockton Heat (1GP, 0-0-0, 1.38GAA, .938sv%) and the ECHL’s Kansas City Mavericks (39GP, 13-20-3, 3.49GAA, .882sv%).

Kozun on the move in the ECHL

Goaltender Taran Kozun (135GP, 64-52-15, 2.73GAA, .912sv% with Kamloops and Seattle ’10-’15) has been traded to the Wheeling Nailers by the Allen Americans. Kozun did not appear in any games with the Americans this season but has played for the Kansas City Mavericks, Indy Fuel, Rapid City Rush, and Orlando Solar Bears. The Nailers will be his sixth team this season, five of which he suited up for. He has also been a member of nine ECHL teams, having previously been part of the Missouri Mavericks, Utah Grizzlies, and Manchester Monarchs. The ECHL record for teams played for by a goaltender in a season is six.

Mattheos sent to Fort Wayne

Forward Stelio Mattheos (253GP, 127G, 151A with Brandon ’14-’19) has been reassigned by the Chicago Wolves to the Fort Wayne Komets. Mattheos has played in six AHL games this season, registering two assists. This will be the 21-year-old forward’s first time playing in the ECHL. Mattheos is a signed 2017 third-round draft pick of the Carolina Hurricanes.

Hunt signs with Nailers

Forward Garet Hunt (193GP, 16G, 25A with Vancouver ’04-’08) has signed with the Wheeling Nailers. Hunt has yet to play this season following a stint with the Kunlun Red Star in 2019-20. While with the KHL team, Hunt collected one assist in 28 games. Hunt is the ECHL’s all-time penalty minute leader with 2666, spread over 702 games with the Stockton Thunder, Alaska Aces, and Jacksonville IceMen. He has also scored 102 goals and 142 assists.

Gropp signs extension with Vasterviks IK

Forward Ryan Gropp (258GP, 117G, 137A with Seattle ’13-’17) has signed a contract extension through the 2021-22 season with Vasterviks IK of Sweden’s HockeyAllsvenskan. Gropp is a 2015 second-round draft pick of the New York Rangers. Through 14 games this season, Gropp has six goals and two assists.

Cikhart joins HC Banik Sokolov

Forward Jan Cikhart (49GP, 3G, 5A with Tri-City and Regina) has been loaned by HC Benatky nad Jizerou (Czech2) to HC Banik Sokolov (Czech2). Cikhart has been held pointless in four games with HC Benatky nad Jizerou. Cikhart is eligible to return to the Regina Pats next season.
