Pettersson retires from hockey

Forward Fredrik Pettersson (111GP, 43G, 50A with Calgary ’05-’07) has announced his retirement from hockey. Pettersson played 14 professional seasons following his junior hockey career. Last season he played in 25 games for the ZSC Lions in the NL, scoring eight goals and adding four assists. Pettersson won a World Championship and an NL championship over his career. The Calgary Hitmen selected Pettersson 48th overall at the 2005 CHL Import Draft. The Edmonton Oilers selected Pettersson in the fifth round of the 2005 NHL Draft.

US Division awards handed out

On Friday, the Western Hockey League handed out its awards to the US Division.

  • Player of the year – Dustin Wolf (Everett Silvertips)
  • Goaltender of the year – Dustin Wolf (Everett Silvertips)
  • Defenseman of the year – Nick Cicek (Portland Winterhawks)
  • Rookie of the year – Thomas Milic (Seattle Thunderbirds)
  • Most Sportsmanlike player – Eli Zummack (Spokane Chiefs)
  • Scholastic player of the year – Mason Mannek (Portland Winterhawks)
  • Top Scorers – Cole Fonstad (Everett Silvertips) / Gage Goncalves (Everett Silvertips)

All players who won awards in the US Division are eligible for the league-wide awards to be announced at a later date.

Kukuca signs with HK Dukla Michalovce

Forward Andrej Kukuca (122GP, 51G, 63A with Seattle ’18-’20) has signed with HK Dukla Michalovce of Slovakia for the 2021-22 season. Kukuca split the 2020-21 season between HK Dukla Trencin (Slovakia, 45GP, 2G, 4A) and HK Spartak Dubnica (Slovakia2, 7GP, 4G, 5A). The Thunderbirds selected Kukuca 28th overall at the 2018 CHL Import Draft.

Koch signs with EV Landshut

Forward Davis Koch (319GP, 91G, 164A with Edmonton and Vancouver) has signed with the DEL2’s EV Landshut. Koch comes over from Heilbronner Falken, where he played for two seasons. In 2020-21, Koch played 29 games, scoring 12 goals and adding 14 assists.

Stieler remains with Augsburger

Forward David Stieler (142GP, 36G, 44A with Swift Current ’06-’08) has been signed to a contract extension by the Augsburger Panther of the DEL. 2021-22 will be Stieler’s sixth season with the club. In 2020-21, Stieler scored 13 goals and added 20 assists in 38 games. The Broncos selected Stieler 14th overall at the 2006 CHL Import Draft

Chyzowski hired as general manager and head coach with Merritt Centennials

Former Vancouver Giants assistant coach Dave Chyzowski has been hired by the BCHL’s Merritt Centennials as their head coach and general manager. Chyzowski had spent just one season with the Giants. From 1987-90, Chyzowski was a member of the Kamloops Blazers where he racked up 144 points in 138 games. The Islanders selected Chyzowski second overall at the 1989 NHL Draft.
