Cougars win third in a row, beating the Royals 5-3

The Prince George Cougars scored the first five goals and held on to a 5-3 win over the visiting Victoria Royals before 1,472 at the CN Centre in Prince George.

Jonny Hooker (10th and 11th) and Koehn Zimmer (14th and 15th) each scored twice for the Cougars to lead the way. Hudson Thorton scored his eighth of the season to add the insurance. Gannon Laroque (fifth), Anthony Wilson (third), and Luke Shipley (second) replied for the Royals who lost their fourth straight game.

Tyler Brennan stopped 29 of 32 Royals shots to pick up the win. Campbell Arnold repelled 29 of 34 Cougars shots in the loss.

Oil Kings top Raiders 4-1

The hometown Oil Kings beat the Prince Albert Raiders 4-1 in front of 2,866 fans at Rogers Place in Edmonton.

The Raiders opened the scoring before the Oil Kings scored four unanswered to win their third straight contest.

Dylan Guenther (11th), Luke Prokop (ninth), Jaxson Weibe (sixth), and Justin Williams (20th, into an empty net) scored for the Oil Kings in the win. Reece Vitelli (13th) scored the lone marker for the Raiders.

Sebastian Cossa stopped 21 of 22 Raiders shots to pick up his 19th win of the season for the Oil Kings. Tikhon Chaika was solid on goal for the Raiders stopping 44 of 47 Oil King blasts.

Hitmen beat Pats 4-3 in a shootout

DUB Weekly Awards

Goalie of the Week

Tyler Brennan picked up DUB Goalie of the Week honors after posting an impressive 2-0-0-0 record with a 1.97 GAA and .941 SV% for the Prince George Cougars.

In 20 games this year the Winnipeg native has an 8-11-0-1 record with a 3.34 GAA and .902 SV%.

Player of the Week

Four-year overage forward Justin Hall had himself a week for the Lethbridge Hurricanes. The Edmonton, AB product had eight points (6G-2A) in the four games he played, which included back-to-back hat-tricks.

Hall has 36 points (18G-18A) in 29 games 2021-22 which matches his career-high that was accomplished in less than half as many games. Back in 2019-20 in which he had 36 points (13G-23A) in 61 games. In 155 career games, he has 108 points (46G-62A).

DUB Alumni

Slovakia names 4 DUB alum and 1 current player to Men’s Olympic roster

Four DUB alumni were named to the Slovakina Men’s Olympic hockey team along with one current DUB member. Milos Roman (Vancouver 2017-20), Martin Marincin (Prince George, Regina 2010-12), Martin Gernat (Edmonton 2011-13), and Mario Grman (Red Deer, Kootenay 2014-16) were the alumni named to the club.

Samuel Knazko (currently with Seattle) started the season with the Finland’s TPS before heading to North America. The Trencin, Slovakia product has played in just eight games collecting three points (1G-2A) for the Thunderbirds before getting the called for Olympic duty.

Back to the alumni, Grman a defenseman has played 20 games with HPK in Finland where he has two points (1G-1A). He played two WHL seasons, one with the Rebels and the other with the Ice where he had 10 points (all assists) in 103 games.

Gernat, also a defenseman is currently playing with Lausanne in Switzerland’s NL where he has 13 points (6G-7A) in 32 games. In his two-year WHL career all spent with the Oil Kings he had 68 points (12G-56A) in 83 games.

Another DUB alumni defenseman making the cut is Marincin. The 29-year-old is currently playing with HC Ocelari Trinec in Czechia where he has 13 points (4G-9A) in 32 games. In 125 games over two seasons in the WHL, Marincin had 96 points (25G-71A).

Roman, the lone forward of the group is a teammate of Marincin on HC Ocelari Trinec. In 36 games this season, he has 18 points (7G-11A). Over three WHL seasons all with the Giants he picked up 139 points (61G-78A) in 160 games.

2 DUB alumni named to Switzerland’s Men’s Olympic roster

Two DUB alumni were named to Switzerland’s Olympic team. Defensemen Michael Fora (Kamloops 2014-15) and Mirco Müller (Everett 2012-14) made the cut to represent their country.

26-year-old Fora is the team captain for HC Ambri-Piotta of Switzerland’s NL where he has 14 points (3G-11A) in 25 games. In his one season in the WHL with the Blazers he played 60 games where he picked up 32 points (6G-26A).

Müller, another 26-year-old and former a NHL first-round pick of the San Jose Sharks (18th overall in 2013) is currently with HC Lugano of the NL where he has 10 points (3G-7A) in 37 games. The Winterthur, Switzerland product played his two WHL seasons with the Silvertips where he collected 58 points (11G-47) in 123 games.
