Daily Dose of the DUB: Focht signs with Canucks, Bjorkstrand gets five more years, and more

 

Canucks ink Focht

Carson Focht (262GP, 74G, 87A with Tri-City and Calgary) has signed his entry-level contract with the Vancouver Canucks. Focht was a fifth-round draft pick of the Canucks in 2019. He was the seventh overall selection of the 2015 WHL Draft by the Tri-City Americans.

Bjorkstrand gets five more years from Columbus

Oliver Bjorkstrand (193P, 144G, 146A with Portland ’12-’15) has signed a five-year deal with the Columbus Blie Jackets. Bjorkstrand has played parts of six seasons with the Blue Jackets, who drafted him in the third round of the 2013 NHL Draft. Over 246 NHL games, Bjorkstrand has scored 65 goals and added 68 assists. In 2012-13 he was a winner of the Ed Chynoweth Cup with the Winterhawks and won a Calder Cup with the Lake Erie Monsters in 2015-16.

Board of Governors to meet on Friday

Prior to December 15th, it appeared as though the WHL was going to play as scheduled on January 8th. On December 15th, the WHL postponed that date indefinitely and we were told the Board of Governors would meet sometime in January to consider potential start dates. It is unknown at this time what the WHL’s Board of Governors will be discussing regarding potential start dates or if there will even be a season.

Report: Viktor Persson to join Blazers in April

As first reported by Patrick Johnson of the Vancouver Sun / Province, Viktor Persson, the 56th overall pick in the CHL Import Draft, has decided to complete the Swedish season with Brynas IF J20 team. Assuming the Kamloops Blazers, who selected Persson, are playing in April he will then join the team for the duration of their season. Persson is also an unsigned seventh-round 2020 NHL draft pick of the Vancouver Canucks.

Morrow signs with Liiga’s Pori Assat

Joe Morrow (227GP, 33G, 118A with Portland ’07-’12) has signed to play with Assat in Finland’s Liiga. Morrow has not played since the end of last season, which he split between the Binghamton Devils (AHL, 16GP, 1A, 3G) and Dinamo Minsk (KHL, 22GP, 0G, 3A). Morrow has 162 games of NHL experience with the Boston Bruins, Montreal Canadiens, and Winnipeg Jets.

Kyle Haas (46GP, 1G, 3A with Saskatoon ’11-’12) and Brayden Gelsinger (12GP, 0G, 0A with Kamloops ’11-’13) have been released by their respective ECHL teams. Hass played 45 games last season with the Fort Wayne Komets scoring twice and adding seven assists. Gelsinger played five games with the Utah Grizzlies this season scoring one goal and added an assist.
