Daily Dose of the DUB: WHL with two big announcements, alumni signings and more

East Division Hub Centre approved

On Friday, the Western Hockey League announced that a hub centre in Regina had been granted approval for the East Division’s seven teams. The teams will head to Regina to begin preparation for their season to start on March 12, 2021. All games will be held exclusively in Regina’s Brant Centre with practices being held at the adjacent Co-Operators Centre.

Central Division COVID-19 testing results

Of the 245 tests administered in the Central Division’s first week of the first phase of return to play, zero tests came back positive. Due to their being no positive results, all five teams in Alberta have been granted the ability to conduct on-ice practices.

Two WHL alumni sign extensions with Motor Ceske Budejovice

Both Simon Kubicek (113GP, 16G, 39A with Seattle) and Matej Toman (126GP, 15G, 22A with Prince George, Saskatoon, and Swift Current) have signed extensions with Motor Ceske Budjovice of the ExtraLiga in the Czech Republic.

Baragano signs with SC Rapperswil-Jona Lakers

Defenseman Inaki Baragano (60GP, 5G, 11A with Kamloops ’19-’20) has sign a contract for two years with SC Rapperswil-Jona of the NL in Switzerland. This season Baragano has been playing for Lausanne U20 in the U20-Elit league in Switzerland, scoring six goals and adding 10 assists in 22 games. He also participated in the IIHF U20 World Junior Championships for his native Switzerland, assisting on one goal in four games.

Reinhart heads to the DEL

Defenseman Griffin Reinhart (209GP, 30G, 81A with Edmonton ’09-’14) has signed with the Iserlohn Roosters of the DEL. Originally a 2012 first-round draft pick of the New York Islanders, Reinhart has played 37 NHL games with the Islanders and Edmonton Oilers. Last season with the Kunlun Red Star (KHL), Reinhart had two assists in 33 games. Reinhart was a member of the 2011-12 WHL Champions, as well as the 2013-14 WHL and CHL (Memorial Cup) Champion Edmonton Oil Kings.
