Winterhawks transitioning to new ownership

As reported by The Oregonian on Saturday night, the majority owner of the Portland Winterhawks has filed for Chapter 15 bankruptcy raising some questions about the future of the organization. The WHL released a statement on Sunday afternoon which said the league is aware of the situation and is working to ensure a smooth transition to new ownership in short order. The statement says business will operate as usual with the club with President Doug Piper, GM, and Head Coach Mike Johnston and the rest of the executive staff remaining with the team.

Ducks sign Guhle to a two-year contract extension

The Anaheim Ducks have signed defenseman Brendan Guhle (233 GP, 30 G, 73 A with the Prince Albert Raiders and Prince George Cougars from 2013-2017) to a two-year contract extension. Drafted by the Buffalo Sabres in the second round of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, Guhle has four goals and 10 assists in 59 NHL games. His younger brother Kaiden Guhle is currently with the Raiders and his eligible for this year’s NHL Entry Draft.

Samuelsson signs in Kazakhstan

Henrik Samuelsson (162 GP, 75 G, 123 A with the Edmonton Oil Kings from 2011-14) has signed with Saryarka Karaganda in Kazakhstan. The former first-round pick of the Phoenix Coyotes had five goals and seven assists in 31 games with the Manchester Storm in England in 2019-20. He will be joining former Oil Kings teammate Mads Eller who signed with Saryarka last week.

Ferletak signs new contract in Sweden

Kristian Ferletak (31 GP, 1 A with the Victoria Royals and Swift Current Broncos in 2014-15) has signed on with Kiruna IF in Sweden for one year. He suited up for 40 games with Malun in Sweden this year scoring 21 goals and recording 17 assists to lead the team in goals and points.

Milroy helping to supply PPE

Former WHLer Duncan Milroy (264 GP, 132 G, 155 A with the Swift Current Broncos and Kootenay ICE from 1999-2003) was a hero on the ice for Kootenay scoring the WHL Championship-clinching goal in double overtime in 2002, and now he helps to supply heroes off the ice with protective equipment. His company BetterLife Home Medical is helping to provide Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to our front-line workers who are currently fighting the spread of COVID-19.
