Daily Dose of the Dub: Weekly awards handed out; Suspensions doled out

Weekly Awards

Everett Silvertips defenceman Jake Christiansen was named WHL Player of the Week after recording five points (1G, 4A) in two games to lead the Silvertips to a 2-0 series lead over Tri-City. The 19-year-old had a breakout season with 44 points (12G, 32A) in 67 games as well as a +26 rating.

Lethbridge Hurricanes goalie Carl Tetachuk was named WHL Goaltender of the Week with wins in Games 1 and 2 over the Calgary Hitmen. The rookie netminder stopped 63 of 66 shots in those two games, good for a 1.43 GAA and a .955 save percentage. In the regular season he posted a 24-9-1-1 record with a 2.88 GAA, a .909 save percentage and two shutouts.

Suspensions

Prince Albert Raiders forward Brett Leason was handed a one game suspension for the above hit on Red Deer’s Cameron Hausinger. This is Leason’s first suspension of his WHL career and will miss Game 3 of the teams’ first round series.

The Lethbridge Hurricanes were given supplemental discipline for the team’s actions in Game 2 of their first round series against Calgary. The team was given a total of $1500 in fines for multiple fights/instigating fights. Also forwards Scott Mahovlich and Jackson Shepard were each given one game suspensions for their actions on Saturday. Mahovlich, his first suspension, was given suspension for a one man fight in the last five minutes and Shepard, also his first suspension, was given an instigating a fight in the last five minutes.

After previously being suspended for a TBA games, Seattle Thunderbirds defenceman Jake Lee was handed a two game suspension for his cross check of Giants forward Justin Sourdif. Lee has already served one of the two games, that being the Thunderbirds’ 4-1 win on Saturday to tie the series at one game a piece.

As a result of the hit, Sourdif will not travel with the team to Seattle for Games 3 and 4.

Former Thunderbirds prospect signs NHL deal

Former Seattle Thunderbirds prospect Dante Fabbro signed an entry-level contract with the Nashville Predators, forgoing his senior season at Boston University. The Coquitlam, BC native was drafted by Seattle eighth overall in the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft but instead, chose to go the NCAA route and playing his junior hockey with the Penticton Vees of the BCHL. He was drafted in the first round (17th overall) in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft by the Predators.

Alumni signs AHL deal

Former Moose Jaw Warriors goaltender Zach Sawchenko signed a two-year one way deal with the San Jose Barracuda of the AHL. The 21-year-old took a less traditional route to the pros, deciding to not play his overage season in the WHL but instead with the University of Alberta. In two seasons in USports, he had a 28-4-0 record with a 1.79 GAA, a .919 save percentage and five shutouts in 34 games. The Calgary native spent four seasons with the Warriors, putting up an 88-65-12-4 record with a 3.11 GAA, a .908 save percentage and nine shutouts in 177 WHL games.
