Viveiros named Henderson Silver Knights Head Coach

Manny Viveiros becomes the first head coach named by the newly minted AHL affiliate of the Vegas Golden Knights. The 54-year-old product of St. Albert, AB, has taken his first AHL coaching job, this follows one season as head coach of the Spokane Chiefs. Prior to that, Viveiros was the head coach of the Swift Current Broncos for the 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons. As a player in the WHL, Viveiros played his entire career with the Prince Albert Raiders, He played 251 games, registering 60 goals and 261 assists.

Gorges joins BCHL’s West Kelowna Rockets

Josh Gorges (245GP, 33G, 119A, with Kelowna ’00-’04) has become the Director of Player Development for the West Kelowna Warriors of the BCHL. Following a successful WHL career with the Rockets, one in which he became captain, Gorges played 14 seasons professionally in North America. Undrafted, the Kelowna, BC native immediately played for the Cleveland Barons after his WHL tenure. From there he went on to play 783 NHL games with the San Jose Sharks, Montreal Canadiens, and Buffalo Sabres.

Nikolishin joins Kunlun Red Star

Ivan Nikolishin (216GP, 65G, 138A with Everett and Red Deer ’13-’16) has signed with Kunlun Red Star of the KHL. The Red Star is his second team in Russia’s top professional league. Last season with Severstal Cherepovets, Nikolishin scored once and added two assists in 15 games. He also played for two VHL teams (Molot-Prikamie Perm and Neftyanik Almetievsk) scoring three goals and adding seven assists in 16 games.

San Jose Barracuda loan out WHL alumni

With so much unknown about when specifically AHL hockey will get underway, the San Jose Barracuda have loaned several players to overseas teams in hopes of continuing their development. This includes Evan Weinger (251GP, 68G, 78A with Portland and Brandon ’14-’18) and Krystof Hrabik (105GP, 35G, 47A with Tri-City). Weinger completed his second season with the Barracuda, scoring nine times and adding 11 assists in 38 contests and is off to TPS of Liiga, Finland’s top professional league. Hrabik completed his career as an American at the conclusion of last season, as he has now aged out of the WHL. He has been loaned to Bili Tygri Liberec of the Czech League

Farren waived by Rockets

Michael Farren (224GP, 28G, 56A with Saskatoon and Kelowna ’16-’20) has been waived by the Kelowna Rockets. Last season as a 19-year-old, Farren scored six goals and added 14 assists in 41 games. The Rockets now have as “overage” players; signed San Jose Sharks pick Dillon Hamaliuk, signed New Jersey Devils pick Nolan Foote, Liam Kindree, Sean Comrie, and Devin Steffler remaining on their roster. The WHL only allows three 20-year-olds to be on the roster.
