Daily Dose of the Dub: UNB National Champions; Savoie committed to NCAA; Zary and Evanoff honored

UNB wins U Sports National Championship

Powered by Ex-WHL players including Joe Gatenby (Kamloops, Kelowna), Rylan Parenteau (Prince Albert, Tri-City), and Mark Rassel (Medicine Hat) the University of New Brunswick won their 3rd national championship in four years 4-2 over UAB.

Savoie commits to the University of Denver

Widely believed to be the top prospect in the 2019 WHL Bantam Draft, St. Albert, Alberta native Matthew Savoie announced that he had committed to the University of Denver. He stated on social media that he would be playing for them starting in 2021/22.

After being denied exceptional status in the WHL, as reported here on DubNetwork, Savoie’s path for the 2018-19 season is unknown at this time.

Since he will not be allowed to play a full season as a 15-year-old in the WHL, his options could include going to the USHL, a natural fit for someone on a path to the NCAA.

This commitment also puts into question whether whichever team has the top pick in the Bantam Draft, decides to still select Savoie.

Evanoff named WHL Goalie of the Week

-2000-born netminder Adam Evanoff continued his stellar season with the Moose Jaw Warriors by leading them to two straight wins to end their season. he stopped 29-of-31 in a win over the Brandon Wheat Kings Wednesday and then turned away 23-of-34 Swift Current Broncos shots.

Evanoff went 19-10-2-1 and posted a 2.62 GAA and 0.916 save percentage.

Zary nominated as WHL Player of the Week

-With their season on the brink, 2001-born forward Connor Zary started playing his best hockey. He scored five times and added four assists for nine points over four games.

He had two game-winning goals and nabbed the game-tying goal to allow the Blazers to snag a point and keep their season going Friday. He picked the best time to step up and score pivotal goals.
