Daily Dose of the Dub: Training Camp Updates, three teams sign prospects, Rebels and Thunderbirds make trade and more

Raiders sign import pick Kechkin 

The Prince Albert Raiders have signed 2019 CHL Import Draft pick Ivan Kechkin to a WHL Player Agreement. The Russian forward split time between Russia’s U-17 and U-18 leagues registering 12 goals and 21 assists in 38 games.

Thunderbirds acquire Donohoe from Rebels for Hogg and draft pick

The Seattle Thunderbirds have acquired 19-year-old defenseman Hunter Donohoe from the Red Deer Rebels in exchange for the rights to 2002-born goaltender Louden Hogg and a conditional seventh-round pick in the 2020 WHL Bantam Draft.

With the Thunderbirds only having six signed defensemen prior to the trade, Donahoe will have a great shot at making the Thunderbirds after being in and out of the Rebels line-up for the last two seasons. In 79 career games with the Rebels, Donohoe has three goals and two assists. Hogg played 19 games with Edina High School in Minnesota last season and posted a 2.09 GAA and .907 save percentage.

Royals sign 2019 WHL Draft pick Scott 

The Victoria Royals have signed Tanner Scott to a WHL Player Agreement. The native of Red Deer, Alberta suited up for the OHA Edmonton Bantam Prep team tallying 18 goals and 25 assists in 29 games before the Royals selected him in the third round of the 2019 WHL Bantam Draft.

Rockets sign North Vancouver prospect Babcock

The Kelowna Rockets have signed 2019 fifth-round pick John Babcock to a WHL Player Agreement. He played last season with North Vancouver Bantam A1 in the PCBHL but stats are unavailable. In five games with the MHC Selects last season, he had two assists.

Blazers list local product Milburn 

The Kamloops Blazers have added local product Reagan Milburn to their 50-man protected list. The 16-year-old forward played in the BCMML last year with the Thompson Blazers and recorded 18 goals and 16 assists in 40 games. He won’t be sticking around with the team to start the year though, as he’s been removed from the Blazers training camp roster.

Blazers trim training camp roster to 31 

Speaking of the Blazers training camp roster, they’ve trimmed the group down to 31 players. There are no surprising cuts from the roster, but it is worth noting that Connor Levis has been removed from the roster, likely to protect his NCAA eligibility as he decides which path is the right one for his hockey career. Americans cut roster to 36 players

The Tri-City Americans have cut their training camp roster to 36 players. 2019 third-round bantam draft pick Jake Sloan is the only signed player to be removed from the roster. His removal is not a huge shock as he is only eligible for limited action with the Americans due to his age.

Giants training camp roster down to 33 players

The Vancouver Giants training camp roster is now at 33 players after a round of cuts. 1999-born defenseman Landon Fuller, 2000-born forwards Tyler Ho and Hunor Torszok (at Moose Jaw’s camp) and 2001-born forward Aidan Barfoot are notable players not listed on the roster.

Hitmen release training camp schedule 

The Calgary Hitmen will kick off training camp on Wednesday and it will run until Sunday, September 1. Fans will likely get their first look at off-season acquisition Jett Woo as the Hitmen look to be atop the WHL’s Eastern Conference this year.

Tigers release training camp schedule

The Medicine Hat Tigers have also released their training camp schedule which will run from Friday, August 30th to Sunday, September 1.

Graduating Koch gets a try-out contract in Germany

Graduating forward Davis Koch (319 GP, 91 G, 164 A with the Edmonton Oil Kings and Vancouver Giants) has inked a try-out contract with the Iserlohn Roosters in Germany. In his final season in the WHL, Koch led the Giants in goals, assists, and points.

Mattheos to miss Hurricanes training camp due to cancer treatment 

The Carolina Hurricanes announced today that Stelio Mattheos (253 GP, 127 G, 151 A with the Brandon Wheat Kings) will miss training camp this year as he is currently undergoing treatment for testicular cancer which was diagnosed two days after Mattheos helped the AHL’s Charlotte Checkers win the Calder Cup Championship. Maple Leafs announce rookie camp roster

The Toronto Maple Leafs have invited the following players with WHL ties to their Rookie Camp:

  • Filip Kral (Spokane Chiefs)
  • Sergei Sapego (Prince Albert Raiders)
  • Ian Scott (Prince Albert Raiders)
  • Riley Stotts (Calgary Hitmen)
  • Riley Woods (Spokane Chiefs)

Rangers also announce training camp roster

The New York Rangers also released their rookie camp roster which includes Jake Elmer (Lethbridge Hurricanes), Brett Kemp (Medicine Hat Tigers), Josh Maser (Prince George Cougars) and Matthew Robertson (Edmonton Oil Kings).

Stars sign Blazers alumni Upshall to try-out contract

The Dallas Stars have signed Scottie Upshall (173 GP, 99 G, 127 A with the Kamloops Blazers) to a try-out contract. Upshall will be looking to land an NHL job following a season off from professional hockey after failing to stick with the Edmonton Oilers upon receiving a try-out contract.

Wild sign Winterhawks alumni McLeod 

The Iowa Wild have signed Cody McLeod (257 GP, 69 G, 68 A with the Portland Winterhawks) to a one-year contract. McLeod split last season between the NHL’s New York Rangers and Nashville Predators notching one goal in 38 games.

Nejezchleb signs in the Czech Republic

Richard Nejezchleb (150 GP, 63 G, 69 A with the Brandon Wheat Kings and Tri-City Americans) has signed a one-year contract with Poruba in the Czech Republic. Last season with Nové Zámky B in Slovakia, he had six goals and five assists in 39 games.
