Daily Dose of the Dub: Three players hit milestones; Stankoven recalled; Byram named CHL Player of the Week

Night of Milestones

18-year-old defenseman Montana Onyebuchi appeared in his 150th WHL game Tuesday night against the Moose Jaw Warriors. The Dugald, Manitoba native was originally drafted by Everett, 63rd overall in the third round of the 2015 Bantam Draft, where he appeared in 85 games for the Silvertips before being a part of the blockbuster that sent Garrett Pilon and Ondrej Vala the other way. Onyebuchi has recorded 36 points in his 150 career games.

Newly acquired Kootenay ICE forward Brandon Machado skated in his 100th WHL game in a 2-0 win over Swift Current on Tuesday, going 5-of-8 in the faceoff circle. The 18-year-old was traded exactly one week ago from Saskatoon along with a 2021 fifth round pick for Cyle McNabb, collecting a goal and an assist in three games with the ICE. The Airdrie, AB native has nine points in his 100 games.

The Swift Current Broncos had a new face in the line-up against Kootenay, with Alex Thacker dressing in his first career WHL game. The 16-year-old was drafted by the Broncos in the sixth round in the 2017 Bantam Draft and has been playing this season with the Fort Saskatchewan Rangers of the AMHL, collecting 27 points in 29 games.

Blazers recall forward

The Kamloops Blazers have recalled 15-year-old forward Logan Stankoven from the Thompson Blazers of the BCMML. The native of Kamloops has been torching the B.C. midget league, putting up 63 points in just 26 games which leads the league by a whopping 20 points. The 2018 fifth overall pick has one assist in two games with Kamloops this season.

Byram gets nationwide honours

2019 NHL Draft prospect Bowen Byram has been named CHL Player of the Week after earning WHL POW honours. The Giants’ defenseman had six points in two games including a five point game in a 7-4 win over the Blazers, which broke a team record for points in a game by a defenseman. Byram is expected to be the first d-man selected in June’s draft which happens to be held in Vancouver.

Three Stars of the Night

1st Star: Moose Jaw’s Justin Almeida had two goals and two assists in the Warriors’ win over Kamloops.

2nd Star: Kootenay’s Jaeger White had a goal and an assist, including the game winner in a 2-0 win over Swift Current.

3rd Star: Kootenay captain Peyton Krebs also had a goal and an assist for the ICE.
