Daily Dose of the Dub: Swetlikoff signs with Kelowna; Aubin inks with Swift Current; Jokiharju with Finland; Glass shines in World Juniors exhibition game

Rockets sign the elusive Swetlikoff

-Two previous WHL teams tried and failed to sign 2001-born forward Alex Swetlikoff but they were not based in his hometown of Kelowna, B.C.

The third-round pick by the Seattle Thunderbirds had his rights traded to the Lethbridge Hurricanes in May for defenseman Kirby Proctor. Then the ‘Canes moved his rights to Kelowna for a fourth-round pick in 2022.

Earlier this week, Swetlikoff left the BCHL’s Vernon Vipers and signed with the Rockets.

He had eight goals and 12 assists for 20 points in 27 games with the Vipers.

He joins the Rockets and will be on the team when they come back from Christmas break. He is six-foot-two and 179 pounds.

Hart gets first win

-Carter Hart, formerly of the Everett Silvertips turned away 30-of-32 shots in his first performance with the Philadelphia Flyers, netting his first career NHL win.

The three-time WHL Goalie of the Year was called up from the AHL and looked solid in his first ever NHL game.

Aubin signs with Swift Current

-On 12/4/18, the Spokane Chiefs sent the right to Devin Aubin, a 15-year-old d-man who they took in the fourth-round of the 2018 draft as part of a deal for defenseman Noah King.

Aubin signed with the Broncos this week. He has three points and 26 penalty minutes in 23 games with the AMHL’s Grande Prairie Midget AAA Storm. He also played a game in the AJHL with the Grande Prairie Storm.

Jokiharju leaves Blackhawks to join Finland at World Juniors

-1999-born defenseman Henri Jokiharju has been sent to play for Finland at the U20 World Junior Hockey Championships in Victoria and Vancouver, B.C.

He is still eligible to play for the Portland Winterhawks, who still own his rights, but has spent the entirety of the season with the Chicago Blackhawks.

He had 11 assists in 32 games so far in the NHL. He had two goals and two assists for four points in five games last year for Finland at the 2018 World Juniors.

Glass and Canada’s top line clicking

-Hockey Canada has set their roster and played their first exhibition game. They have defenseman Ty Smith from the Spokane Chiefs, d-man Josh Brook of the Moose Jaw Warriors, goalie Ian Scott of the Prince Albert Raiders, center Cody Glass of the Portland Winterhawks, RW Brett Leason of the Raiders and center Jaret Anderson-Dolan of the Spokane Chiefs.

Leason was scratched for Wednesday’s game against Switzerland, a 5-3 Canadian win, with an injury to his hand that he suffered during camp.

Anderson-Dolan saw his first action since October 27th, when he broke his wrist.

Glass had the best night among WHL players as he scored and had two assists.

Sogaard and Denmark get blown out

-Medicine Hat goalie Mads Sogaard was under siege as he played for Denmark against Finland in an exhibition game before the World Juniors.

He gave up seven goals, but faced 40 shots.

Roman nets an assist in 2-1 shootout loss to Czech Republic

-In Nanaimo, B.C., Slovakia got an assist from Milos Roman of the Vancouver Giants but went to the shootout. Roman missed in his shootout attempt and the Czechs took the per-torunament game 2-1 in the eighth round.

Hockey Manitoba names U16 team for Canada Winter Games

-Hockey Manitoba was the latest to name their U16 team for the Canada Winter Games.

Of the prospects, Tyler Brennan (P.G.), Carson Lambos (Kootenay), Skyler Bruce (Kootenay), Eric Alarie (Moose Jaw), Trentyn Crane (Victoria) and Conner Roulette (Seattle )are the ones who have signed with WHL teams.
