Royals sign pair of twin brothers

The Victoria Royals have signed a pair of twin brothers to their standard player agreements.

Jason Spizwaka was the team’s first-round pick in the 2019 WHL Bantam Draft. The five-foot-eleven defenseman weighs 160 pounds and played at Yale Hockey Academy on the Bantam Prep team last season. He recorded two goals and 23 assists in 28 games. The Victoria, B.C. native was also named the CSSHL Bantam Prep Division’s Scholastic Player of the year.

Ryan Spizwaka was drafted by the Royals in the seventh round of the 2019 WHL Bantam Draft. He played alongside his brother at the Yale Hockey Academy on the Bantam Prep team last season. In the same 28 games, the five-foot-nine, 158-pound defenseman had eight goals and 12 assists.

There are currently two other sets of twins playing together in the WHL: The Taphorns (Keenan and Kaeden) in Moose Jaw and The Halls (Adam and Justin) in Lethbridge.

WHL alumni Schuldhaus commits to Queens University

WHL alumni Brandon Schuldhaus has committed to the Queen’s University Gaels for the 2019/20 season. Schuldhaus is a six-foot-four defenseman originally from Houston Texas but raised in Calgary, Alberta. He played 250 games in the WHL scoring 20 goals and 58 assists with the Seattle Thunderbirds, Red Deer Rebels, Moose Jaw Warriors, and Saskatoon Blades.

Pats enter into an agreement with Downtown Business Improvement District

The Regina Pats have entered into a 10-year partnership with the Regina Downtown Business Improvement District to “meet community demands for increased programming and services in the heart of the city”. The most notable part of this agreement will see a visitor service pavilion be named the “Regina Pats Visitor Service Pavilion”. The pavilion will play host to an outdoor rink in the winter along with activities such as yoga, Zumba and salsa during the summer.

Eagles acquire Blazers prospect Darby

The Surrey Eagles acquired Kamloops Blazers prospect Jimmy Darby from the Trail Smoke Eaters in the BCHL for forward Corey Clifton. Darby was a fourth-round pick of the Blazers in the 2016 WHL Bantam Draft but has not reached an agreement with the team. In 40 games with the Smoke Eaters this season, Darby had one goal and five assists.

Silvertips prospect Porchetta signs with Powell River

The Powell River Kings of the BCHL have signed Everett Silvertips prospect Nic Porchetta. Porchetta was drafted by the Silvertips in the 10th round of the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft but has not reached an agreement with the team. He played with Delta Hockey Academy’s Prep team this year scoring 10 goals and 22 assists in 33 games.
