Daily Dose of the Dub: Rebels clinch a playoff spot; Giants win the West; Two sign ELCs

Rebels clinch

Despite losing to Lethbridge on Friday, the Red Deer Rebels have punched their ticket to the WHL Playoffs for the fifth straight season. The Rebels (33-28-4-2) are set to take on the regular season champion Prince Albert Raiders (53-10-2-2) for their first round match up. They clinched due to the Brandon Wheat Kings loss in Regina.

Giants clinch West

After an Everett shootout loss and a win against Kelowna on Friday, The Vancouver Giants have clinched the Western Conference for the third time in franchise history (’05/’06, ’08/’09, ’18/’19). The Giants sit at 100 points with one game remaining and a 48-15-2-2 record. They will take on the Seattle Thunderbirds in the first round of the playoffs.

Two sign ELCs

As talked about in the previous Daily Dose, the Rangers were reportedly close to signing Lethbridge Hurricanes forward Jake Elmer. That was made official on Friday with Elmer and the New York Rangers coming to terms on a three-year entry-level contract for the undrafted free agent. An overage forward, Elmer has had an impressive breakout season during his last in the WHL, he has 79 points (38G, 41A) in 67 games this season including a 13 game goal streak.

Edmonton Oil Kings captain Trey Fix-Wolansky signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets on Friday. The 19-year-old was originally drafted by the Blue Jackets in the seventh round (204th overall) in last year’s NHL Entry Draft and has been on fire ever since. Fix-Wolansky has 101 points (37G, 64A) in 63 games in what will surely be his last season of junior hockey.

Milestones of the Night

Regina Pats defenceman Brady Pouteau skated in his 200th WHL game in what was the final home game of his WHL career. The overager has spent four seasons in the WHL split between Lethbridge and Regina, putting up 48 points (9G, 39A) in his 200 games including a trip to the Memorial Cup with the Pats last season. The Oak Bluff, Manitoba native was originally drafted by the Pats in the fourth round (79th overall) of the 2013 Bantam Draft.

Lethbridge Hurricanes forward Scott Mahovlich appeared in his 150th WHL game in their win over Red Deer. The 19-year-old also has a Memorial Cup appearance on his resume with the Regina Pats last season. This season, the Abbotsford, BC native has 13 points (6G, 7A) in 58 games between Regina and Lethbridge with 55 penalty minutes. Originally signed by the Kamloops Blazers as a listed player back in 2016 and has 22 career points (7G, 15A) with stops in Kamloops, Regina and Lethbridge.

After a two assist performance on Friday, Lethbridge Hurricanes captain Jordy Bellerive hit the 150 assist plateau. Bellerive is in his fourth season in the WHL, all with the Hurricanes, and has 83 points (33G, 50A) in 67 games during the campaign. The signed Pittsburgh Penguins prospect has 267 points (117G, 150A) in 273 WHL games.

Saskatoon Blades defenceman Dawson Davidson played in his 300th WHL game in their win over the Raiders. The overager is enjoying an outstanding campaign, picking up 74 points (13G, 61A) in 67 games for a Blades team that is second in the Eastern Conference. The native of Moosomin, SK has split his career between Kamloops, Regina, and Saskatoon and has 190 career points (37G, 153A).

Three Stars of the Night

1st Star: Prince George’s Vladislav Mikhalchuk had two goals and two assists in their overtime win over Kamloops.

2nd Star: Moose Jaw’s Justin Almeida had a four point night of his own with two goals and two assists in a 6-1 win over Swift Current.

3rd Star: Lethbridge’s Jake Leschyshyn had a hat trick in a 4-3 win over Red Deer.
