CBC announces two WHL games in October

The Canadian Hockey League in conjunction with the CBC announced this morning the schedule for their October and early November games being broadcast.

The season will kick off with the Prince Albert Raiders traveling to Regina to take on the Pats at 1 pm Mountain time on October 2nd.

Just two weeks later, the Red Deer Rebels will host the Calgary Hitmen, also at 1 pm.

Thunderbirds send Berry to Raiders

The Seattle Thunderbirds and the Prince Albert Raiders announced a trade on Wednesday afternoon. The Raiders acquired goaltender Jackson Berry from the Thunderbirds in exchange for a conditional eighth-round pick in the 2022 WHL Prospects Draft.

Berry, who is from Chestermere, AB, was a sixth-round pick of the Moose Jaw Warriors at the 2016 WHL Draft. Last season he was 4-8-1 in 13 appearances for the Thunderbirds. He also had a 3.59 goals-against average and a .878 save percentage.

Raiders sign five forwards

The Prince Albert Raiders announced the signing of five forwards to WHL Standard Player Agreements.

2002-born Ethan Ironside, who is from Prince Albert, SK, played one game with the SJHL’s Kindersley Clippers in 2020-21. He did not register a point. Ironside was originally an eighth-round draft 2017 WHL Draft pick of the Kamloops Blazers.

2002-born Cale Sanders hails from Claresholm, AB, and played seven games in 2020-21 for the AJHL’s Okotoks Oilers. He scored three times and added two assists.

2004-born Alex Mack, who is from Edmonton, AB, played five games with OHA Edmonton U18 Prep where he scored two goals and added two assists.

2004-born Bryce Warkentine, who is from Landmark, MB, played in four games with the Eastman Selects U18 AAA team. He scored one goal. He was a sixth-round 2019 WHL Draft pick of the Raiders.

2005-born Zachary Wilson hails from Wetaskiwin, AB, and played three games with the Northern Alberta U16 Prep team, scoring twice and adding an assist. The Raiders selected him in the fifth round of the 2020 WHL Draft.

Cougars sign two prospects

2005-born forward Zackary Shantz and 2005-born defenceman Ephram McNutt have signed WHL Standard Player Agreements with the Prince George Cougars.

Shantz, who is from Grande Prairie, AB, spent the 2020-21 season with Northern Alberta U16 Prep, scoring two goals and adding two assists in three games. The Cougars selected him in the third round of the 2020-21 WHL Draft.

McNutt hails from Red Deer, AB, and spent his 2020-21 season with Red Deer Chiefs U18 AAA team. In five games he had one goal and four assists. McNutt was a fifth-round pick of the Cougars at the 2020 WHL Draft.

Giants sign Bochek

The Vancouver Giants announced that 2003-born forward Kyle Bochek has signed a WHL Standard Player Agreement.

Bochek, who is from Moosomin, SK, played four games with the SJHL’s Melville Millionaires in 2020-21. He did not collect a point. The Giants selected Bochek in the 12th round of the 2018 WHL Draft.

Royals sign Zborovskiy

The Victoria Royals announced the signing of 2004-born forward Igor Zborovskiy to a WHL Standard Player Agreement.

Zborovskiy, who hails from Moscow, RUS, has been playing hockey in Canada for the past three seasons. Last season, Zborovskiy played six games for the Notre Dame Hounds U18 AAA program, earning one assist.

Oilers sign Sceviour to PTO

32-year-old forward Colton Sceviour (78 goals, 114 assists in 251 games with Portland and Lethbridge 2004-09) has been signed by the Edmonton Oilers to a professional try-out contract.

Sceviour, who hails from Red Deer, AB, played his entire 2020-21 season with the Pittsburgh Penguins, where he scored five goals and added five assists.

The Dallas Stars selected Sceviour in the fourth round of the 2007 NHL Draft.

ZSC Lions re-sign Sigrist

22-year-old forward Justin Sigrist (3 goals, 7 assists in 50 games with Kamloops 2017-18) has re-signed with the ZSC Lions of the NL in Switzerland.

Last season, Sigrist scored 10 goals and added nine assists in 51 regular-season games. He also added two goals and an assist in nine playoff games.

The Blazers had selected Sigrist 42nd overall at the 2017 CHL Import Draft.

Crossley heads to Utah

22-year-old defenceman Austin Crossley (8 goals, 13 assists in 159 games with Prince Albert and Prince George 2016-20) has signed with the ECHL’s Utah Grizzlies.

Crossley, who is from Fort St. John, BC, spent the 2020-21 season overseas with Olofstroms IK of Division 2 in Sweden. He played in just two games.

Daneault commits to Merrimack

16-year-old forward Ty Daneault has committed to Merrimack College for the 2023-24 season. The Saskatoon Blades selected him in the seventh round of the 2019 WHL Draft.

Last season with the Red Deer Chiefs U18 program, Daneault scored five goals and added five assists in five games.
