Daily Dose of the Dub: Olson signs an ATO with San Diego; Oil Kings sign a defenseman; WHL players of the week named

Olson signs an ATO with San Diego:

-The San Diego Gulls, who are the AHL affiliate to the Anaheim Ducks have signed Tri-City Americans forward Kyle Olson to an Amateur Try-Out (ATO) agreement.

Olson, who was drafted by the Duck in the third round of the 2017 NHL Draft, has until June 1st to be signed be them or risk becoming a free agent.

Olson had 70 points in 62 regular season games in 2018-19 and three points in Tri-City’s five-game first round loss to Everett.

The ATO gives the Ducks franchise an opportunity to take a closer look at Olson and make their final decision on whether to sign him to an NHL entry-level contract or risk making him available to other teams.

Edmonton signs a 2003-born d-man:

-The Oil Kings announced on Monday that they had signed 2002-born defenseman Matt Smith to a WHL education contract. Smith, who was drafted in the third round of the 2018 WHL Bantam Draft, played the 2018-19 season with the Fort Saskatchewan Midget AAA Rangers. He had 12 points in 41 total games.

Smith also played in the WHL Cup for Team Alberta. His home province took bronze at the tournament.

Edmonton has their two first round picks from the 2018 Bantam Draft on their current playoffs roster in Dylan Guenther and Keagan Slaney. They had five draft picks overall among the first 48 picks and have now signed them all.

Lang headed to Czech Republic’s U18 training camp:

The Kamloops Blazers announced in a press release that 2001-born forward Martin Lang will be attending training camp for the Czech Republic as they prepare for the 2019 U18 World Championships. Kamloops has 2002-born goalie Dylan Garand and 2001-born forward Connor Zary with Canada as they prepare for the same tournament.

Blichfeld trying to make Denmark’s Men’s World Hockey Championship roster:

-Now former Portland Winterhawks forward Joachim Blichfeld has gone back to Denmark. According to DN’s Winterhawks beat writer Josh Critzer, this is prepare for and try to make Denmark’s World Hockey Championships roster.

The tournament goes from May 10-26 in Slovakia. Blichfeld has represented his country at the U16, U18 (twice) and U20 (twice) level previously.

Two signed Winterhawks prospects win national title:

-2003-born, Portland Winterhawks signed forwards James Stefan and Jack O’Brien helped their Little Caesar’s U15 team win the Tier 1 15-Only National Championship.

 

Montgomery honored:

-Prince Albert overage forward Sean Montgomery had his first career hat-trick on Friday and then added another marker on Sunday as the Raiders won both games and took a 2-0 series lead.

Montgomery has already doubled his point output from the first round in just the first two games of Prince Albert’s second round series with Saskatoon.

-Edmonton Oil Kings goalie Dylan Myskiw was named WHL Goalie of the Week. He led his team to a 2-0 series lead over the Calgary Hitmen by stopping 46-of-49 total shots.

Myskiw rebounded from a tough first round, where he gave up nine goals over eight period of action, before giving up the net to backup Todd Scott. Edmonton surprised many by going back to Myskiw to start the second round. That gable has surely paid off though as shown by Myskiw getting this honor.

Discipline handed down from Vancouver-Victoria Game 2:

-The WHL fined the Vancouver Giants $750 for the events at the end of Game 2 when a couple players engaged with some Victoria Royals after coming off the bench to celebrate their overtime victory.

They also made public a two-game suspension for Jake Kustra for his cross-checking major on Jared Dmytriw in the second period of Game 2. Kustra will be eligible to return for Game 5 if it happens. Vancouver leads the best-of-seven series 2-0.

Kustra would return in the same game as overage forward Kody McDonald after he has served his six-game suspension for a stick-swinging incident in the first round of the playoffs.
