Daily Dose of the Dub: Nine WHLers named to U18 team;

Nine WHLers make Canada’s U18 roster:

-Hockey Canada announced on Friday their 23-man roster for the U18 World Championships in Sweden from April 18th-28th.

Here are the WHL players that made the team:

  • Dylan Garand – G – 2002 – Kamloops Blazers
  • Taylor Gauthier – G – 2001 – Prince George Cougars
  • Braden Schneider – D – 2001L – Brandon Wheat Kings
  • Kaedan Korczak – D – 2001 – Kelowna Rockets
  • Daemon Hunt – D – 2002 – Moose Jaw Warriors
  • Brayden Tracey – F – 2001 – Moose Jaw Warriors
  • Dylan Cozens – F – 2001 – Lethbridge Hurricanes
  • Connor Zary – F – 2001L – Kamloops Blazers
  • Peyton Krebs – F – 2001 – Winnipeg ICE

L=Late birthday and not eligible for the 2019 NHL Draft.

For Gauthier, Korczak, Tracey, Cozens and Krebs it is another opportunity to impress NHL scouts for this June’s NHL draft. For Garand and Hunt, they are already on Hockey Canada’s radar and should expect to get invitations to the U18 Hlinka Gretzky Cup camp as well.

Freadrich signs with Orlando:

-Less than a week after his WHL career ended, Jared Freadrich is back on the ice. He signed an ECHL standard player agreement with Orlando and made his ECHL debut Friday against the Florida Everblades. Orlando is an affiliate of the Tampa Bay Lightning. He was a plus-one in Orlando’s 3-2 overtime loss.

Hofer joins AHL’s Rampage:

-Portland Winterhawks 2000-born goalie Joel Hofer is on an amateur tryout with the San Antonio Rampage, the AHL affiliate of the St Louis Blues. Hofer signed an entry-level contract with the Blues on March 21st. Hofer was taken in the fourth round of the 2018 NHL Draft and played this past season with Swift Current Broncos and Portland Winterhawks. Former Portland Winterhawks defenseman Tyler Wotherspoon plays for the Rampage.

Hyman signs with Wings:

Aaron Hyman joins Freadrich in continuing their season. the 1998-born right-handed blue liner was signed to a standard ECHL player contract by the Kalamzaoo Wings. Hyman made his debut Friday night against the Tulsa Oilers in a 4-1 loss. Kalamazoo is an affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks.

 

Three stars of the night:

  1. Sean Montgomery (Prince Albert) – The overage forward picked a great time for his first career hat-trick. He had three of the Raiders six goals in their 6-1 Game 1 win over the Saskatoon Blades.
  2. Brett Leason (Prince Albert) – One goal and three assists for four points in the big Game 1 win for P.A. It was his first four point game of the postseason, but his fourth since October.
  3. Trent Miner (Vancouver) – 15-save shutout, his first career playoff clean sheet as the Giants took down the Victoria Royals 3-0 in Game 1.

Honorable mentions:

Jared Dmytriw had a goal and an assist and Bowen Byram had two assists to lead the way offensively for the Giants… Ian Scott stopped 23-of-24 for Prince Albert…
