Daily Dose of the Dub: Lajoie and Blazers part; Krebs and Cozens named leaders at U18 Worlds; Benson and Bean honored by the AHL

Lajoie and Blazers part:

-Via a press release on Thursday afternoon, the Kamloops Blazers announced that their head coach for the 2018-19 season, Serge Lajoie would not be returning for the 2019-20 campaign.

Lajoie was announced as head coach, replacing the outgoing Don Hay back on June 25th of 2018. He went 28-32-6-2 in his now only season with the Blazers. Kamloops got into the playoffs as the third seed in the B.C. Division and were eliminated in six games by the Victoria Royals.

Prior to coming over to Kamloops and the WHL, Lajoie coached three seasons at the University of Alberta in CIS/USports.

The release stated that the search would start right away for a replacement. However, some believe that Darryl Sydor, who was added as an assistant coach in February may receive some strong consideration.

Krebs named captain and Cozens an assistant for Hockey Canada:

-Hockey Canada announced that Winnipeg ICE forward Peyton Krebs and Lethbridge Hurricanes Dylan Cozens would make up part of the leadership group for their U18 team at the World Championships.

Krebs was named captain and Cozens an assistant. Both are expected to be high draft picks at the 2019 NHL Draft. The tournament starts on April 18th in Sweden.

Benson makes the All-AHL 2nd team:

-Former Vancouver Giants forward Tyler Benson had quite the rookie season for the Bakersfield Condors of the AHL. Benson had 14 goals and 51 assists for 65 points in 66 games with the Condors.

Benson was named to the second All-AHL team and also made the All-Rookie team.

-Former Calgary Hitmen and Tri-City Americans Jake Bean was also named to the AHL All-Rookie team. He tied a franchise record for the Charlotte Checkers for rookie d-men with 13 goals. He also had 31 assists for 45 points. Both of those are franchise records.

WHL Prospect Camp roster named:

Three stars of the night:

  1. Jared Dmytriw (Vancouver) – He had a goal and two assists for three points to lead the way for the Giants in a 6-1 victory over Victoria and a 4-0 series sweep.
  2. Brayden Watts (Vancouver) – Six shots and a goal and an assist.
  3. Lukas Svejkovsky (Vancouver) – Another Giants forward who had a goal and an assist in a balanced attack.
