Kraken to play games in U.S. Division WHL rinks

The Seattle Kraken unveiled its preseason schedule on Friday and it features three games in arenas that are home to WHL clubs.

The Kraken plays its first NHL game of any sort on Sept. 26 at the Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena against the Vancouver Canucks.

Seattle takes on the Edmonton Oilers at Angel of the Wings Arena in Everett on Oct. 1, and the Calgary Flames at accesso ShoWare Center in Kent on Oct. 2

ICE name Munz manager, broadcast and communications

A day after announcing the departure of Mitch Peacock as manager, broadcast and communications, the Winnipeg ICE announced Brian Munz will step into the role starting with the 2021-22 season.

Munz also takes over as the play-by-play voice of the ICE. He has worked in media in Winnipeg for the last 15 years in a number of roles and most recently was the director of communications for Golf Manitoba.

Lambert joins his hometown Storm

The Grande Prairie Storm of the Alberta Junior Hockey League announced the signing of 2001-born forward Edge Lambert on Thursday.

Lambert started the 2020-21 season with the Storm, but finished with the Tri-City Americans, posting two goals and seven points in 18 games.

The Grande Prairian posted 17 goals and 26 points as a rookie for the Ams during the 2019-20 WHL season.

Report: Katzalay commits to Queen’s

According to a report from U SPORTS reporter Ben Steiner, 2000-born Surrey Eagles forward Holden Katzalay (six goals, 12 assists in 98 combined games with Seattle in 2017-18 and Vancouver in 2019-20) has committed to Queen’s University for this September.

The Vancouver, BC product finished third in BCHL scoring during the 2020-21 season with 11 goals and 30 points in 19 games.

Dillabough signs on with the Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba

The Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba has brought on former longtime Brandon Wheat Kings employee Rick Dillabough as its manager of operations and sponsorship lead.

Dillabough stepped away from the Wheat Kings in May after more than 30 years with the team. Most recently, he was Brandon’s director of business operations, sales and sponsorship.

Howden signs a one-year extension in New York

The New York Rangers announced on Friday that forward Brett Howden (109 goals, 158 assists in 267 games with Moose Jaw from 2014-18) has signed a one-year contract extension for the 2021-22 National Hockey League season.

The 23-year-old from Oakbank, MB was a restricted free agent after posting one goal and six assists in 42 games for the Blueshirts this past season, his third in the NHL.

Harper inks an ECHL deal with Adirondack

Forward Shane Harper (100 goals, 114 assists in 335 games with Everett from 2005-10) signed a contract with the ECHL’s Adirondack Thunder on Friday.

The 32-year-old from Valencia, CA spent the last three seasons in the Swedish Hockey League. He posted five goals and 13 points in 26 games with Brynäs IF in 2020-21.

Mohr transfers from Red Deer College to MacEwan

Forward Kobe Mohr (35 goals, 66 assists in 265 games with Edmonton, Kamloops, Kelowna, and Moose Jaw from 2015-20) has transferred from Red Deer College to Grant MacEwan University in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference.

The 22-year-old Lloydminster, AB product attended Red Deer College in 2020-21 but didn’t play any games for the Kings because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
