Daily Dose of the Dub: ICE acquire elder Savoie; two WHL alumni start pro careers

ICE acquire Savoie

The Winnipeg ICE have acquired the rights to 2002-born Carter Savoie from the Regina Pats for a fifth round pick and two conditional draft picks. He is the older brother of the consensus first overall pick in the upcoming bantam draft, Matthew Savoie. The ICE hold the first overall pick in next month’s draft, which makes this move interesting as both brothers are currently committed to the University of Denver. Many felt Matthew would potentially fall in the draft due to his college commitment but it looks as though Winnipeg is going for it. Carter had 73 points (31G, 42A) in 58 games as a rookie this year for the Sherwood Park Crusaders of the AJHL.

Two go pro

Tri-City Americans graduating forward Parker AuCoin has signed with the Orlando Solar Bears of the ECHL and is expected to make his pro debut as early as Thursday. The St. Albert, AB native played parts of five seasons with the Americans, compiling 180 points (88G, 92A) in 262 games in his WHL career.

Moose Jaw Warriors defenceman Jett Woo has joined the Utica Comets of the AHL on an ATO. The 18-year-old was drafted in the second round (37th overall) in 2018 by the Vancouver Canucks and signed a three-year entry-level contract with the team last month. Woo finished the season with 66 points (12G, 54A) in 62 games.

Chiefs add defenceman

The Spokane Chiefs have added 2000-born defenceman Luke Gallagher to their roster as an affiliate player. The Mead, Washington native played 22 games for the Chiefs earlier this season, collecting two assists, before joining the Trail Smoke Eaters of the BCHL where he had seven assists in 15 games. Gallagher has played in 65 WHL games split between the last three seasons where he has one goal and six assists.

ICE group purchases Junior A club

50 Below Sports and Entertainment, the owners of the Winnipeg ICE, announced on Wednesday that the group has purchased the Winnipeg Blues of the MJHL. The Blues will move to a 700 seat within the Rink Hockey Academy facility and will have access to the new 7000 square foot gym that is being built as a part of the ICE moving to Winnipeg. ICE President and General Manager Matt Cockell will take on the role of President and Governor of the Blues.

Pats coach representing Canada

Regina Pats Head Coach Dave Struch has been named assistant coach of Team Canada for the upcoming World U18 Championships in Sweden. In his first season as head coach, the Pats went 19-45-1-3 who were still reeling from going all in last season as Memorial Cup hosts. World Championships begin on April 14th.
