Daily Dose of the Dub: ICE acquire Barteaux on busy WHL trade deadline

Barteaux heads to ICE in blockbuster

In a move taken straight out of the OHL playbook, the Winnipeg ICE acquired Dawson Barteaux along with a 2020 fifth-round pick and a 2023 sixth-round pick from the Red Deer Rebels for a 2020 second, a 2021 second, a 2021 fifth, a 2022 second, a 2023 second and a conditional third-round pick in 2023. Barteaux served as team captain for the Rebels posting seven goals and 16 assists in 39 games this season. Entering his overage season, he is expected to turn pro next season within the Dallas Stars organization.

Silvertips acquire Regnier, Puutio from Broncos

The Everett Silvertips acquired forward Ethan Regnier and defenseman Kasper Puutio from the Swift Current Broncos for forward Martin Fasko-Rudas, defenseman Parker Hendren, a first-round selection in 2020 and a second-round pick in 2022. Regnier was the Broncos leading scorer with nine goals and 12 assists in 34 games. He was also the last remaining member of the 2017-18 WHL Championship team. Puutio led the Broncos blueliners with one goal and 15 assists in 35 games. Hendren has a goal and an assist in 38 games this season.

Fasko-Rudas flipped to Blades

Martin Fasko-Rudas did not last long in the Broncos organization as he was flipped to the Saskatoon Blades for the younger Matej Toman, the rights to the unsigned Cale Ashcroft and a sixth-round pick in 2022. Fasko-Rudas has four goals and four assists in 17 games while Toman has four goals and eights assists in 37 games split between Saskatoon and Prince George.

Bode traded to Broncos

Swift Current also acquired forward Bode Hagan from the Brandon Wheat Kings for a 2021 sixth-round pick. In 18 games this season he’s tallied four assists.

Schmiemann serves one-game suspension

Brandon’s Dom Schmiemann was handed and served a one-game suspension for this hit on Medicine Hat’s Elijah Brown.

Blades acquire Daley from Regina

The Blades also acquired Caiden Daley from the Regina Pats for a 2021 sixth-round pick (Medicine Hat). In 35 games this year, between Brandon and Regina, Daley has two goals and 10 assists.

Carpendale on the move to Kamloops

The Kamloops Blazers acquired Tyler Carpendale from the Seattle Thunderbirds for a conditional third-round pick in the 2020 WHL Bantam Draft. Carpendale has not played this year due to an injury sustained in pre-season.

Balas to the Blazers

In the Blazers second of three moves, they acquired goaltender Brett Balas from the Spokane Chiefs for 2021 ninth-round bantam pick. In two games with the Chiefs this season, he posted a 5.86 GAA and .841 Save Percentage.

Younger Rybinski joins Tigers

A year after his older brother Henrik Rybinski requested a trade from Medicine Hat, Luke Rybinski has been traded to the Tigers for a 2020 sixth-round pick by the Kamloops Blazers. The 2018 seventh-rounder has yet to play his first WHL game.

Pats acquire Carrier from Rockets

The Regina Pats acquired prospect Cole Carrier from the Kelowna Rockets for a sixth-round pick in the 2020 WHL Bantam Draft and a conditional eighth-round pick in this year’s draft. Carrier has not played in Kelowna this season but did play eight games last season recording one assist.

Rockets acquire Peterek

The Kelowna Rockets acquired Jonas Peterek from the Calgary Hitmen for the Rockets’ fifth-round pick in the 2021 WHL Bantam Draft. In 32 games this season he has eight goals and eight assists. The move fills the open import spot left by the departure of Lassi Thomson.

Americans trade Newell’s rights to Kelowna

The Kelowna Rockets acquired the WHL rights to defenseman Jarrod Newell from the Tri-City Americans for the Rockets sixth-round pick in the 2022 WHL Bantam Draft. He is currently playing with the AJHL’s Camrose Kodiaks and is expected to remain there while the Rockets retain his WHL rights.

Ettinger joins Chiefs

In the final trade of the day, the Victoria Royals acquired Ty Ettinger from the Winnipeg ICE for a eighth-round pick in the 2020 WHL Bantam Draft. Ettinger has suited up for 11 games this season with one assist.

Hitmen recall Galloway for rest of season

The Calgary Hitmen recalled Tyson Galloway from the Merritt Centennials of the BCHL for the rest of this season. In eight games this season with Calgary he has one assist.

Viggars recalled by Calgary

The Hitmen also recalled defenseman Andrew Viggars from the West Kelowna Warriors of the BCHL. In one game with Calgary this year he was held off the scoresheet.

Carriere returning to AJHL

Calgary also released forward Tye Carriere from the active roster. In 15 games this year he notched one goal and one assist. He’s expected to join the Canmore Eagles of the AJHL.

  • Medicine Hat’s Corson Hopwo geared up for his 100th WHL game.
  • Newly-acquired Logan Doust played in his 100th WHL game and his first as a Moose Jaw Warrior.
  • Brendan Boyle played in his 100th WHL game as the Prince George Cougars took on the Prince Albert Raiders.
  • Seattle’s Max Patterson played in game #300 while Mekai Sanders scored his first WHL goal.
  • Saskatoon’s Nolan Kneen recorded his 100th WHL assist.
  • Vancouver’s Nicco Camazzola made his WHL debut.

Lineup returns:

  • Jack O’Brien returned for Portland after missing two games due to an illness.
  • Nolan Jones was listed in the latest weekly report but was healthy enough to play in his first opportunity with his new team, the Moose Jaw Warriors after being traded yesterday.

-Schultz was listed on the latest weekly report but Tarun Fizer was not.

Savoie cleared for Youth Olympic Games

Winnipeg ICE prospect Matthew Savoie has been cleared to participate in the Youth Olympics after being sidelined with an injury sustained in Winnipeg’s December 28th game.

Former Oil King on the move in USHL

Todd Scott (68 GP, 3.47 GAA and 0.887 save percentage with a 32-19-9-2 record with the Vancouver Giants and then Edmonton Oil Kings from 2017-20) was traded to the USHL’s Tri-City Storm on Friday. He left the Oil Kings earlier this season for personal reasons.

Fahey signs with Bulldogs

River Fahey (95 GP, 8 G, 9 A with the Red Deer Rebels, Kootenay ICE and Victoria Royals) has signed on with the BCHL’s Alberni Valley Bulldogs.

Leafs re-sign Marincin

The Toronto Maple Leafs re-signed defenseman Martin Marinicin (125 GP, 25 G, 71 A with the Prince George Cougars and Regina Pats from 2010-12) to a one-year contract extension. He has played 13 games with the Leafs this season.

Valcak signs with Leeds

Patrik Valcak (57 GP, 2 G, 10 A with the Kelowna Rockets and Lethbridge Hurricanes in the 2003-04 season) signed with the Leeds Chiefs in England after sitting out last season.

Stephenson signs in Slovakia

Logan Stephenson (249 GP, 19 G, 66 A with the Tri-City Americans from 2001-06) has signed a two-week try-out with Zvolen in Slovakia. He started the year with Corona Brasov recording two goals and 15 assists in 21 games.

Vala plays 100th professional game

Ondrej Vala (191 GP, 21 G, 53 A with the Kamloops Blazers and Everett Silvertips from 2015-18) played in his 100th professional game.

First Star: Victoria’s Shane Farkas made 42 saves on 43 shots

Second Star: Brandon’s Jiri Patera made 41 saves on 42 shots

Third Star: Saskatoon’s Koen MacInnes made 36 saves on 37 shots
