Hunt returns for Moose Jaw

Moose Jaw Warriors defenseman Daemon Hunt was back in the lineup for the first time since December 3rd due to injury.

Thunderbirds dress 17 skaters vs. Spokane

The Seattle Thunderbirds were forced to dress 17 skaters instead of the regular 18 due to absences from Conner Bruggen-Cate and Simon Kubicek. Zachary Ashton played his first game in a month and Lucas Ciona suited up for the first time in a little under two weeks.

Ginnell returns for Spokane 

On the Spokane side, Brad Ginnell was in the lineup for the first time since February 4th.

Stanick returns for Pats, Welke dresses as back-up

Sloan Stanick returned to the Regina Pats lineup for the first time since February 8th. The team also recalled Spencer Welke from the Prince Albert Mintos to back up Donovan Buskey and sent him back after the game. Calgary Hitmen prospect Ethan Hein will join the team in Medicine Hat as an emergency back-up on Saturday.

Giants recall Sim

Drew Sim was the back-up netminder for the Vancouver Giants on Friday meaning Braedy Euerby has returned to the Richmond Sockeyes of the PIJHL.

Gulka returns for Royals

On the Victoria side, Sean Gulka returned to the Royals lineup for the first time since January 17th.

Sander out for Cougars 

Jack Sander was not in the lineup for the Cougars on Friday due to an upper-body injury.

Kneen out for Blades with illness

Saskatoon Blades defenseman Nolan Kneen did not play on Friday due to illness.

Hrabik listed as assistant coach for Americans

Tri-City Americans captain Krystof Hrabik was listed as an assistant coach for Friday’s match-up with the Portland Winterhawks. He has been out of the lineup due to injury since January 28th. In a statement to our Brandon Rivers, Americans GM Bob Tory had this to say

“We have had injured players do this in the past. Particularly our older leaders as not only is it a good experience for them but also helpful for the coaches and beneficial for our players. Mature leadership is important especially during a season like we are having when we are reestablishing our program.”

Ludvig leaves with injury

Winterhawks captain Johnny Ludvig left the game vs. Tri-City after falling awkwardly into the boards and did not return. Winterhawks radio man Nick Marek noted he was seen in street clothes near the Winterhawks bench during the game which is a good result from a scary-looking incident.

Tigers to honour Ridley

Medicine Hat Tigers broadcaster and bus driver Bob Ridley is approaching his 4000th WHL game broadcast on March 14th. Ridley has been calling Tigers since the inaugural season in 1970 and has only missed one game in his tenure, due to a curling assignment.

  • Lethbridge’s Ty Prefontaine suited up for his 250th WHL game.
  • Seattle’s Ryan Gottfried played in game #100 in his WHL career.
  • Spokane’s Ty Smith notched his first career hat-trick and broke his own record for most points by a Chiefs’ blueliner with eight.
  • Vancouver’s Bowen Byram recorded his 100th WHL assist.

43 WHL alumni to compete for Dr. W.G. Hardy Trophy

The University of British Columbia Thunderbirds (22 WHL alumni) and University of Saskatchewan Huskies (21 WHL alumni) are competing in a three-game series to decide the Canada West Championship in USports. The Huskies led by Jordan Tkatch (336 GP, 68 G, 120 A with the Prince George Cougars and Prince Albert Raiders from 2011-16), and Carson Stadnyk (286 GP, 79 G, 80 A with the Everett Silvertips 2011-16) defeated the Thunderbirds 3-2.

Victoria’s Carson Miller was given a five minute major and game misconduct for this hit to the head on Vancouver’s Alex Kannok Leipert.
