Bruggen-Cate and Mattson team up once again for St. Francis Xavier University

Former Kelowna Rockets teammates Leif Mattson (240 GP, 79 G, 115 A with the Kelowna Rockets and Spokane Chiefs from 2016-20) and Conner Bruggen-Cate (262 GP, 40 G, 65 A with the Kelowna Rockets and Seattle Thunderbirds from 2015-20) will be reuniting in 2020-21 at St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia when they suit up for the X-Men.

Lauer named WHL Eastern Conference Coach of the Year

Edmonton Oil Kings head coach Brad Lauer has been named the WHL’s Eastern Conference Coach of the Year. Lauer led the Oil Kings to a first-place finish in the Central division with a 42-12-6-4 record for 94 points this season.

Williams named WHL Western Conference Coach of the Year

Out west, Dennis Williams of the Everett Silvertips has been named the WHL Western Conference Coach of the Year. Williams’ Silvertips finished with a 46-13-3-1 record, good enough for second place in the WHL’s U.S. division.

Hitmen name Coaches Award winner

The Calgary Hitmen named Dakota Krebs this year’s winner of the team’s Coaches Award. Krebs has also been named co-winner of the Player’s Choice Award alongside Mark Kastelic. 

Tigers announce leadership award

The Medicine Hat Tigers have named James Hamblin this year’s winner of the team’s leadership award. The Tigers captain was in his final season with the Tigers this season.

Hurricanes name Scholastic Player of the Year

The Lethbridge Hurricanes have named defenseman Alex Thacker this year’s Scholastic Player of the Year for the 2019-20 season.

Ross signs extension in Germany

Brad Ross (270 GP, 109 G, 136 A with the Portland Winterhawks from 2007-2012) has signed a one-year contract extension with Lausitzer Fuchse Weisswasser in Germany. He split last season between Germany and the Fort Wayne Komets of the ECHL recording nine goals and 12 assists in a total of 32 games.

Tigers announce passing of off-ice official Frank Lanz

The Medicine Hat Tigers announced on Monday that long-time off-ice official Frank Lanz had passed away at the age of 89. Lanz served as the team’s goal judge from their inaugural game in 1970 until his final game in 2017. He was presented with the WHL’s Distinguished Service Award in 2013 alongside brothers Balzer, John and Tony.
