WHL Championship Series will have a Game 6

It was a back and forth affair on Friday night at the Langley Events Centre in which the Vancouver Giants and Prince Albert exchanged goals throughout the night. Ultimately, the Giants came out on top with a 4-3 victory in regulation to send the series back to Prince Albert for Game 6. Raiders defenseman Max Martin made his return to the lineup after missing the last two games due to injury. He finished the game as a minus-two with one shot on goal. Game Six goes Sunday evening at the Art Hauser Centre.

Cougars extend broadcast agreement with 94.3 The GOAT for 2019-20 season

The Prince George Cougars have extended their broadcast agreement with 94.3 The GOAT and Vista Radio for the 2019-20 season. Every Cougars game will be heard on 94.3 The GOAT starting in September. Fraser Rodgers will return to the broadcast booth for his third season while Hartley Miller will return for his seventh season as analyst.

Kelly Guard joins Okanagan Rockets as goalie coach

The Okanagan Rockets have partnered with BC’s Hockey Zone Program to bring Kelly Guard into the fold as the program’s goaltending coach. Guard will be working with the Okanagan Rockets Major Midget, Minor Midget and Major Bantam Teams. In BC Hockey’s Zone Program he will be working with the North, South and Central Zone’s. Guard played 115 games with the Kelowna Rockets from 2002-04 and won two WHL Championships as well as a Memorial Cup with the Rockets.

More WHL alumni at IIHF World Championship 

We have two more names to add to the list of WHL alumni playing at the IIHF World Championship.

Martin Marincin (67 GP, 14 G, 42 A with the Prince George Cougars) is representing Slovakia, who are the host team for the 2019 edition of the IIHF World Championship.

Toni Rajala (60 GP, 26 G, 37 A with the Brandon Wheat Kings) is suiting up for Finland at the tournament and has already made an impact assisting on a sweet goal by 2019 NHL Draft Eligible prospect Kaapo Kakko against Canada.

WHL alumni Gable commits to Grant MacEwan University

The Grant MacEwan University Griffins Men’s Hockey Team added three players to their roster on Friday which includes WHL alumni Kole Gable. Gable played 166 regular season games in the WHL and had 18 goals and 21 assists with the Edmonton Oil Kings and Swift Current Broncos. Gable finished out his junior career this season with the Fort McMurray Oil Barons of the AJHL registering 24 goals and 41 assists in 58 games.

Ponich heads to medical school

Brett Ponich (242 GP, 2 G, 45 A with the Portland Winterhawks) has announced that he has been accepted into medical school at the University of Calgary. Ponich was drafted by the St. Louis Blues in the second round of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft and played five seasons of pro hockey before deciding to head back to school at the University of Alberta-Augustana for the 2016-17 season.

Second Star: Vancouver’s Brayden Watts had a goal and an assist.

Third Star: Prince Albert’s Brett Leason had two assists.

Vancouver’s Jadon Joseph had two assists and David Tendeck made 37 saves on 40 shots.
