Giants acquire Budy from Rebels for Sexsmith, Conditional Pick

The Vancouver Giants have acquired forward Brendan Budy from the Red Deer Rebels in exchange for 17-year-old defenseman Joel Sexsmith. The two teams also swapped conditional draft picks in the 2020 WHL Bantam Draft.

Budy is a 2000-born forward from Langley, BC who was originally drafted by the Rebels in the fourth round of the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft. He played the majority of last season with the USHL’s Tri-City Storm but also got into a handful of games with the University of Denver in the NCAA as one of the youngest players in the U.S. to play NCAA hockey last season. In 31 games with Tri-City, he had 11 goals and 20 assists. He was held pointless in six games with the University of Denver. Budy de-committed from the University of Denver to play for Tri-City and is now committed to the University of North Dakota for the 2020/21 season. However, Steve Ewen of The Province reports the Giants expect Budy to be in their lineup as early as next weekend.

Sexsmith is a 17-year old defenseman who was a first-round pick of the Swift Current Broncos in the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft. The Broncos shipped him to Vancouver in January of 2018 for a first-round pick in the 2019 WHL Bantam Draft. The Giants signed Sexsmith less than 10 days after the trade but he has only played six games with the team due to injury, going pointless. Last season he primarily played for Delta Hockey Academy in the CSSHL where he recorded five goals and seven assists in 15 games.
