Rebels sign Lind to WHL Education Contract

Tuesday was the sixth day since the 2020 WHL Bantam Draft took place and the Red Deer Rebels signed the sixth overall pick Kalan Lind. Lind, the younger brother of former Kelowna Rocket and Vancouver Canucks prospect Kole Lind spent the majority of the year with the Swift Current Broncos Bantam AA registering an astonishing 68 goals and 52 assists in just 27 games. Thunderbirds sign Oremba

The Seattle Thunderbirds followed the Rebels by signing their own first-round pick (7th overall) Sam Oremba to his WHL Education Contract. He played Bantam AA with the Regina Monarchs this year scoring an incredible 75 goals and 58 assists in 31 games. Warriors sign CSSHL Player of the Year Nominee 

The Moose Jaw Warriors have signed 2019-20 CSSHL Elite 15s MVP nominee Thomas Tien to his WHL Education Contract. Drafted by the Warriors in the 11th round (not a typo!) of the 2019 WHL Bantam Draft, Tien had 33 goals and 44 assists in 34 games with the St. George’s Elite 15’s.

Winterhawks sign 11th round pick Nguyen 

The Portland Winterhawks announced they have signed 2019 11th round WHL Bantam Draft pick Marcus Nguyen to his WHL Education Contract. Nguyen finished second in scoring with nine goals and 23 assists for his Calgary North Stars Midget AAA team.

Hockey Canada announces cancellation of 2020 Hlinka Gretzky

Hockey Canada has officially canceled the 2020 Hlinka Gretzky Cup set to take place in Edmonton and Red Deer this August due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In a statement, Hockey Canada says they are still planning for the 2021 World Junior Hockey Championship to take place in Edmonton and Red Deer this winter.

NHL extends agreement with CHL for one year

The NHL-CHL Player Development Agreement was set to expire at the end of the 2019-20 season, but it has now been extended for one year with no changes to the agreement announced.

Murray joins Sioux Falls Stampede

Marty Murray (264 GP, 132 G, 260 A with the Brandon Wheat Kings from 1991-1995) has joined the USHL’s Sioux Falls Stampede as Head Coach and General Manager. Murray had been the Head Coach/General Manager of the NAHL’s Minot Minatauros since the 2011-12 season after retiring from professional hockey. Murray’s pro career included stops in Calgary, Saint John, Villacher, Kolner, Philadelphia, Carolina, Hannover, Los Angeles, Manchester, Lugano, Manitoba and Milwaukee over a 14-year career.
