Daily Dose of the Dub: Four teams sign prospects, Broncos acquire prospect from Chiefs, Rockets unveil new jerseys and more

Royals sign four prospects 

The Victoria Royals have signed defenseman Kalem Parker and forward Brayden Schuurman to WHL Player Agreements.

Parker is a 2004-born, Clavet, Saskatchewan native who played for the Martensville Marauders last season in the SBAAHL. Selected in the second round of the WHL Bantam Draft, he was a point-per-game player with six goals and 30 assists in 36 games.

The Royals selected Schuurman in the fourth round of this May’s draft from Yale Hockey Bantam Prep in the CSSHL. In 29 games the Abbotsford, B.C. native registered 17 goals and 20 assists.

A little more than 90 minutes following that announcement, the Royals also announced the signings of defensemen Lukas Shipley and Braden Smith. Shipley was a sixth-round pick of the Royals after splitting the year between West Vancouver Academy in the CSSHL and the Powell River Kings of the VIHA. Smith was also a sixth-round pick in the previous year’s draft. The blue-liner spent the majority of the season with the Thompson Blazers Minor Midget team where he recorded six goals and seven assists.

Winterhawks sign Chyzowski and Thompson 

The Portland Winterhawks have announced the signing of 2019 WHL Bantam Draft picks Kyle Chyzowski and Ryder Thompson to WHL Player Agreements. Playing for Delta Hockey Academy last season, Chyzowski tallied 17 goals and 29 assists in 33 games before being selected in the third round by Portland Winterhawks. Thompson was a fifth-round pick from RINK Hockey Academy where he notched three goals and 20 assists in 23 games.

Chiefs sign Wiles, make a trade with Broncos

The Spokane Chiefs have signed defenseman Raegan Wiles to a WHL Player Agreement. The 2002-born defenseman was added to the Chiefs 50-man protected list last August. After being listed by the Chiefs, Wiles suited up for the AMHL’s Calgary North Stars where he recorded seven goals and nine assists in 33 games. He will be eligible to join the Chiefs full-time this season.

The Chiefs also swung a trade with the Swift Current Broncos acquiring a fifth-round pick in the 2022 WHL Bantam Draft from the Broncos for defensive prospect Hendrik De Klerk. Drafted in the seventh round of the WHL Bantam Draft by the Chiefs, De Klerk had six goals and 31 assists in 44 games with the Swift Current Legionnaires last season.

Raiders sign Usau to WHL Player Agreement 

The Prince Albert Raiders have signed Ilya Usau to a WHL Player Agreement. The Raiders first became aware of Usau at their training camp three years ago as a walk-on and had been working on getting a commitment from him since then. The Belarussian, who lives in Denver, Colorado, had different plans as he committed to the University of Connecticut in April 2017.

Last season, Usau played for Salisbury School in Connecticut and saw 28 games of action with seven goals and nine assists. The Raiders hope he will jump into the lineup and make an immediate impact for the team.

Silvertips sign product of Jr. Silvertips 

The Everett Silvertips have signed Jack Lambert to a WHL Player Agreement. Lambert is the third player to join the Silvertips from the Everett Jr. Silvertips program following Wyatte Wylie and Dawson Butt. The 2003-born forward will be immediately eligible to join the Silvertips after leading the Jr. Silvertips in points (10) and goals (6) last season.

Rockets unveil new jerseys

It’s a big year for the Kelowna Rockets as they get ready to host the Memorial Cup in May. They’re kicking off the season with a new look as they’ve taken the popular red jersey that used to serve as their alternate and put their primary Ogopogo logo on it for their new away jersey. The Rockets also modified their home white jersey to include more black on the shoulders. The team promises a new black third jersey will be unveiled in December as well.

Also unveiled on Thursday was the team’s jersey for the ‘Canadian Cancer Society Pink in the Rink’ game which will also be the team’s home opener. The black jerseys will feature a special 10th-anniversary patch as this is the 10th consecutive season the team has hosted this game.

Hurricanes announce training camp roster 

The Lethbridge Hurricanes announced their training camp roster on Thursday. Of note, 2000-born players Hayden Clayton and Tyler Lowe are not on the roster and Dylan Cozens is still recovering from an off-season injury and not attending camp.

Americans recall Sloan 

In an intriguing move, the Tri-City Americans have recalled prospect Jake Sloan for the upcoming pre-season tournaments just days after cutting him from the roster. The third-round pick of the Americans in the 2019 WHL Bantam Draft won’t be eligible to join the Americans on a full-time basis until the 2020/21 season.

Tigers unveil leadership group 

The Medicine Hat Tigers have announced their leadership group for the 2019-20 season. James Hamblin (260 GP, 79 G, 112 A with the Tigers) will wear the ‘C’ while Ryan Chyzowski (195 GP, 53 G, 66 A with the Tigers), Bryan Lockner (93 GP, 16 G, 24 A with Medicine Hat) and Tyler Preziuso (264 GP, 46 G, 69 A with the Tigers) will each don an ‘A’.

Panthers release Rookie Camp Roster

The Florida Panthers have announced their Rookie Camp Roster which will include Dylan MacPherson (Medicine Hat Tigers), John Ludvig (Portland Winterhawks), Matthew Wedman (Seattle Thunderbirds), and Henrik Rybinski (Seattle Thunderbirds),

Millard named Host for NHL’s Golden Knights

The Vegas Golden Knights have announced that former Brandon Wheat Kings radio voice Daren Millard will be the team’s TV host for all Golden Knights games this season.

Stephenson signs in Romania

Logan Stephenson (249 GP, 19 G, 66 A with the Tri-City Americans) has signed with ASC Corona Brasov in Romania for the 2019-20 season. Stephenson played last season for the Tohoku Free Blades in Japan where he had four goals and 16 assists in 33 games.
