Daily dose of the DUB: Former WHLers claim first NHL goals, plenty of WHL action on the ice

Former Portland Winterhawks defenseman Caleb Jones scored his first NHL goal against the San Jose Sharks on Saturday night. The defenseman has played in six NHL contests and now has two points. While with the Winterhawks, Jones played in 135 games over two seasons registering 19 goals and piling up 98 assists. He was then drafted to the Edmonton Oilers in the 4th round in 2015 and has spent his time with the Bakersfield Condors of the AHL.

Not to be out done former Kelowna Rockets defenseman Madison Bowey scored his first NHL goal as a member of the Washington Capitals. The Rockets captain of two seasons piled up 58 goals and 114 assists in 259 games, leading the team to a WHL Championship. He’s already won the Stanley Cup with the Capitals.

Three Stars of the Night

1st Star Zack Andrusiak The Seattle Thunderbirds leading scorer had 4 goals in the 8-6 loss to the Portland Winterhawks. Andrusiak had a hat trick in the second period and scored the final goal to draw the Thunderbirds to within a goal with 29 seconds left.

2nd Star Jake Leschyshyn The Lethbridge Hurricanes forward broke out with a hat trick and added two assists as the ‘Canes blew past the Ice. Two of his goals came on the power play and he also potted the eventual game winner.

3rd star Nick Henry added a goal to his four assist night, helping power the ‘Canes to their 8-4 win over the Ice

Honorable Mentions

Ethan Anders had 38 saves and stopped all four shooters in the shootout, as Red Deer defeated Edmonton 2-1. Ty Yoder had two goals as the Royals fell to the Tigers 4-2, Roman Basran had 33 saves, squeezing the Rockets past the Blazrers 2-1, Jake McGrew scored the game winner with just 3 seconds left on the clock and added an assist in the Chiefs 2-1 win over the Americans and Jackson Berezowski scored twice including the eventual game winner as the Silvertips downed the Cougars 6-1.
