Daily Dose of the Dub: Draisaitl hits 50; Addison signs with Penguins; Neighbours and Nielsen score OT winners

Draisaitl nets 50 goals:

Former Kelowna Rockets and Prince Albert Raiders center Leon Draisaitl scored his 50th goal in the last day of the NHL regular season. The Edmonton Oilers 24-year-old never hit 50 goals in the WHL, coming closest with 38 in 64 games with the Raiders in 2013-14.

Addison signs entry-level contract with Pittsburgh:

-Lethbridge Hurricanes defenseman Calen Addison signed with the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday. The 2000-born native of Brandon, Manitoba, was drafted by Pittsburgh in the second round of the 2018 NHL Draft, 53rd overall.

Addison also joined teammate Jordy Bellerive in signing Amateur Try Out contracts with Pittsburgh’s AHL affiliate, the WBS Penguins. This allows them to finish the season in the AHL as they battle for a playoff spot.

Addison played his first pro game, a 4-2 loss to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms on Saturday. He had three shots and was a minus-one.

Calgary Buffaloes Midget AAA team on to Telus Cup:

-Red Deer Rebels 2018 first round pick Jayden Grubbe netted the overtime winner for the Calgary Buffaloes as they edged the Cariboo Cougars 3-2.

The Telus Cup, Canada’s Midget AAA National Championship runs April 22nd-28th in Thunder Bay, Ontario.

Other signed WHL prospects on the Buffaloes include goalie Garin Bjorklund (Medicine Hat), defenseman Jack Zayat (Brandon), forward Braden Plaschewsky (Saskatoon) and defenseman Trey Patterson (Red Deer).

Three starts of the night:

  1. Jake Neighbours (Edmonton) – The 16-year-old scored both the game-tying and game-winning goals in the Oil Kings 3-2 OT win over the Calgary Hitmen in Game 1 of their series.
  2. Ethan McIndoe (Spokane) – The hard-checking forward had two goals and an assist for three points as the Chiefs doubled up the Silvertips 6-3, on the road and hold a 1-0 series advantage.
  3. Tristen Nielsen (Vancouver) – The former Hitmen forward had an assist and the OT winner as the Giants won 2-1 in OT and hold a 2-0 series lead.

Eli Zummack had a goal and two assists for three points for the Chiefs… Jackson Berezowski had not just his first, but also his second career playoff goal, in the same game for Everett… Jack McNaughton stopped 31-of-34 for the Hitmen… Griffen Outhouse turned away 37-of-39 in the Royals loss…
