Heading into the draft, the consensus was that American forward Jack Hughes and Finnish forward Kappo Kakko would go one and two at the 2019 NHL Entry Draft and then the Chicago Blackhawks would decide between American forward Alex Turcotte and Vancouver Giants defenseman Bowen Byram with the third overall pick.
The first two picks went as predicted with Hughes going to New Jersey and Kakko going to the Rangers, but Chicago threw a slight curveball into the action by selecting Saskatoon Blades forward Kirby Dach with the third overall pick.
Dach is a six-foot-four centre who played 62 games with the Blades potting 25 goals and 48 assists earning himself a third overall ranking among North American Skaters by NHL Central Scouting.
In total, seven WHL players were selected in the first round of the 2019 NHL Draft.
