Daily Dose of the Dub: Cullen joins Silvertips; Seattle and Medicine Hat going to the postseason

Cullen joins Silvertips

-1999-born forward Lucas Cullen has joined the Everett Silvertips for the last two games of the regular season and their playoff run. The 2014 WHL Bantam Draft pick of the Calgary Hitmen played 51 regular seaosn and three playoff games for them before released. He tallied four goals and five assists for nine points in that span.

He was listed on the Neely Cup roster for the Portland Winterhawks and played in two preseason games, but did not make the regular seaosn roster.

He then ventured back to the West Kelowna Warriors of the BCHL where he potted 50 points in 49 regular seaosn games and 10 points in their seven-game first round series loss to the Wenatchee Wild.

Cullen gives the Silvertips some needed depth up front as they are currently without Martin Fasko-Rudas (returned to Slovakia for schooling this week), Max Patterson (upper body, day-to-day) and Riley Sutter (lower body, week-to-week).

Poulter tallies first shutout

-2001-born goalie Isaac Poluter turned away all 33 shot she faced from the Regina Pats in Swift Current’s 2-0 win Wednesday night. The shutout was the first ever in Poulter’s rookie season. He has played in 25 games so far this season, tallying a 4.245 GAA and 0.891 save percentage to go with three wins.

Since Joel Hofer was traded away to the Portland Winterhawks in January, he has gotten into 16 games.

Brandin Cote nets first WHL coaching win

-Also getting a WHL-first in the 2-0 Swift Current win, was assistant coach Brandin Cote. Head coach Dean Brockman was fulfilling his general manager role by scouting away from the team, giving Cote the bench. Cote played for the Spokane Chiefs 1996-2002 and returned to the WHL as an assistant coach with the Prince Albert Raiders in 2016-17. He then joined his hometown Broncos as an assistant this season.

Sterling gets first goal

-It’s not a story he will share too often, but 2001-born rookie forward Cameron Sterling netted his first career WHL goal into an empty net in Moose Jaw’s 6-2 win over the Brandon Wheat Kings.

Sterling, who was undrafted into the WHL, has four assists to go with his lone goal in 45 games this season.

Victoria battling injury bug

-The Victoria Royals dressed just 15 skaters on Wednesday in their 8-0 loss to the Kamloops Blazers. They have five defensemen listed as out. They dressed five d-men on Wendesday and 10 forwards. Victoria has two games this weekend with the Everett Silvertips to finish the regular season.

Three stars of the night:

  1. Kamloops forward Brodi Stuart had a goal and four assists for a five point night in Kamloops’ lopsided 8-0 win over Victoria.
  2. Medicine Hat forward Brett Kemp notched a hat-trick and an assist for four points in the Tigers’ 7-4 victory over the Red Deer Rebels. The Tigers locked up a p[layoff spot with the two points.
  3. Swift Current goalie Isaac Poulter stopped all 33 Regina shots for the shutout.

Honorable mentions:

-Moose Jaw forward Tristin Langan netted a goal – his 51st and was a plus-three in Moose Jaw’s 6-2 win over Brandon… Medicine Hat’s Ryan Chyzowski had four points in the Tigers’ win… Jaret Anderson-Dolan had two goals, including the OT winner as the Spokane Chiefs edged the Kelowna Rockets 6-5… Henrik Rybinski had four assists for the Seattle Thundebrirds and Owen Williams had the OT winner as they edged the Tri-City Americans 6-5… Seattle locked up a playoff spot with the win.
