Cougars’ Gauthier dealing with an injury, Colina returns to the lineup

Prince George Cougars netminder Taylor Gauthier didn’t dress for Sunday’s 3-2 win over the Vancouver Giants due to injury forcing the Cougars to use an emergency back-up. Gauthier did play Saturday night vs. Tri-City but was pulled after allowing 10 goals on 13 shots. In better news for the Cougars, Ilijah Colina made his return from an upper-body injury and scored a goal in the victory.

Pats break franchise attendance record 

The Regina Pats hosted the Prairie Classic outdoor game on Sunday at Mosiac Stadium breaking a franchise attendance record with 15,401 fans in attendance. The fans didn’t go home happy though as the Pats fell 5-4 in overtime to the Calgary Hitmen.

  • Regina Pats defenseman Nikita Sedov scored his first WHL goal in the Prairie Classic at Mosiac Stadium.

Saskatchewan wins a historic first gold medal in WHL Cup

Saskatchewan doubled up Manitoba 4-2 on Sunday for a historic first gold medal at the WHL Cup. Kylynn Olafson (Edmonton Oil Kings) and Tye Spencer (Kamloops Blazers) had matching point totals with a goal and an assist each.

BC wins bronze at WHL Cup 

BC took home bronze at the 2019 WHL Cup with a 5-4 overtime victory over Alberta. Mats Lindgren (Kamloops Blazers) picked up three assists to lead BC to the win.

WHL Cup All-Star Team 

With the conclusion of the WHL Cup, the All-Star team for the tournament was announced:

  • Defenseman Denton Mateychuk (Manitoba/Moose Jaw Warriors)

  • Forward Carter Dereniwsky (Saskatchewan/Victoria Royals)
  • Forward Brandon Lisowsky (BC/Saskatoon Blades)

Three Stars of the Night:

First Star: Moose Jaw Warriors forward Brayden Tracey had three goals and an assist in a 5-4 win

Second Star: Moose Jaw Warriors forward Ryder Korczak posted a goal and two assists.

Third Star: Calgary Hitmen forward Mark Kastelic scored two goals.

Honourable Mentions

Saskatoon Blades forward Eric Florchuk tallied two goals and one assist. Tyler Brennan made 37 saves on 39 shots in a 3-2 overtime win for the Prince George Cougars.
